I've made an investment into some custom painted lures and I really don't want to lose them and am tired of losing ANY lure really, so what's the best retriever out there besides jumping in with snorkel and fins?

Simply open the safety pin and put your line in, close the pin and drop it down to your lure and bounce it.

You can use a larger spark plug or just add another to the pin if needed.

I've saved a ton of money using one of these....

tied to 80lb. braid on baitcaster with a very short, (maybe broken), rod.

I put my lure retriever on a retractable dog leash. Works great.

If its just stuck in wood shallow you can try the sending the rod at it trick, of course you might find yourself replacing rod tips more often.

RonRig Retriever - 4 and 8 ounces. You don't have to be over the Lure, I use mine on a broken Rod, 120lb Braided Line, and a Ambassaduer C3 Reel. Both are made with Heavy Duty .061 stainless wire, the coil is .043 Stainless Steel.
