I had a problem that started late this summer all of a sudden - the boat ran fine one weekend, the next weekend it didn't.

Johnson 150 Oceanrunner '93 - It starts up just fine and will idle ok for a few minutes. When I engage the throttle it will come up on plane and then lose power (without me moving the throttle). Sometimes it will momentarily catch and speed up. But, it usually sputters and dies out. Once that happens, it can be difficult to restart. Now, once up on a plane, when it starts to die back after about 10 seconds or so if I reach back and squeeze the primer bulb it will keep running at top end speed just fine. If I stop squeezing it, after 8-10 seconds it will start to lose power. BUT, the bulb never sucks flat. Basically, its acting like a fuel flow problem.

Here is what I have done so far:
1. replaced all 6 spark plugs
2. replaced carb bowl and gasket on top right-hand carb that was warped and leaking
3. drained 4 of the 6 carb bowls with no water visible (bottom 2 bowls are VERY hard to get to since they are below the bottom lip of the cowl)
4. replaced primer bulb
5. cleaned anti-siphon ball check valve as best I could
6. ran a can of sea foam in the tank
7. replaced voltage regulator

The mechanic I am working with suggested that I replace the power pack. But, before I go spend $200, I thought I'd see what the TFF had to say!

To me, it sure sounds like a bad fuel pump. But, he does not think that is the problem.

Thoughts?

check the fuel pump definitely a fuel problem if it picks up when bulb is squeezed

You didn't mention fuel filter. Change the filter and if the fuel lines are original, replace them too.

You're right, I did forget to mention the fuel filter. I have removed and cleaned the fuel filter a couple times. There wasn't anything too significant in that filter.

I agree with fuel pump. The stock VRO pumps are not cheap. I have changed several over to electric fuel pumps. Use this electric pump set up. http://texasfishingforum.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/ubb/showflat/Number/11043981/Searchpage/1/Main/888755/Words/%22electric+fuel+pump%22/Search/true/Re:_1993_150_evinrude_VRO_pump#Post11043981

Agree on the fuel delivery problem. Most likely a low fuel pressure problem due to the age of the VRO and/or collapsing fuel lines......

Is there a way to test the pump that is currently on the engine? I want to confirm that is the problem or rule it out.

Yes put a fuel pressure gauge in line coming out of the VOR and run it. Having to pump the bulb is a sure sign of a fuel leak or bad pump.

Hey Gary - I just sent you a PM. This morning, I checked the vent to make sure it wasn't obstructed. It's good. I recleaned the fuel filter. I do not have a water/fuel separator on this boat. So that can't be the prob. I checked the fuel line for leaks and kinks - all good there as well.

But, I noticed that when I prime the bulb, I get kind of a whining/gurgling sound that is coming from somewhere down below the elbow where the anti-siphon valve is. Is that normal? Or should there be no sound coming from the pickup tube after the bulb is squeezed and released?

Just ran the boat on an external tank and it ran like a champ. It's gotta be the pickup tube.

I would suggest checking all of the metal fittings, removing the anti syphon valve and changing all of the fuel lines from the motor to the tanks.

Its probley the fuel line coming apart inside. When you sqeeze the bulb that opens up the line, but when the fuel pump is sucking it can suck the inside lining closed. If its not that, the fuel pump diaghram has gotten stiff from ethanol. If pumping the bulb picks up fuel its not the tube, but could be the anti-siphon because sqeezing the bulb has more vacume than the fuel pump itself.

Anti-siphon valve and fuel line from the bulb to the tank have now been replaced. The boat ran better, but still not like it should. Instead of sputtering out and dying after coming up on plane, it now cuts back and then throttles back up as though a was quickly moving the throttle back and forth (but I'm not moving it at all).

Since it ran great with ZERO problems when I ran it on the external tank, I have to believe that it is a small clog in my pick-up tube.
