I went to Joe Pool for a few minutes yesterday morning and the bluegill bite was booming. I only had a couple of hours because my wife's car was in the shop and she wanted mine to go to the beauty shop. The bluegill were in the edge of the channel again near a grass bed. The odd thing was they were all bigger fish. I usually catch a mix of bigger fish and small fry, but these were all good sized - at least for North Texas. They were suspended at about 5 feet. I ran out of worms about the time I had to go, but I tried a couple of small balls of the sweet carp bait on the ultralight rig. I caught a couple of sunfish right away. The carp and buffalo were not biting, or I would not have dared bait the #8 hook with dough bait. The carp can really destroy the ultralight rig.

Lynn Creek Marina installed a decorative aerator beside the Oasis restaurant which has completely destroyed the rough fish fishery in front of the dock. The carp and buffalo are drawn to the fountain in the no-fishing area away from the dock.

The bust was this morning. I went to Chisholm Park to fish for stocked trout. The wind was howling at 20 gusting to 25. I spent an hour without a bite, and gave up. I came home and roasted my turkey. It looks great.

In your opinion why were the trout not biting? Me and Mike experienced a no bite once last year. We watched a stocking take place on the Guadalupe River and no one caught a single fish even hours after the truck left. The only thing I can think of is sudden shock in a new environment. noidea

I think it is due to the handling by TPWD.

Trout stocked by TRWD are driven from Crystal Lake hatchery in Missouri on the day of the stocking. They are not fed for about a week prior to stocking.

Trout stocked by TPWD are bought from Crystal Lake in large batches, held in TPWD tanks, then distributed. There was a rumor that TPWD executives mandated that starting 2 years ago trout be fed the day before the stocking to make them harder to catch and therefore last longer. I did not verify if that were true.

Trout stocked by the two agencies experience entirely different handling, which may explain why Crystal Lake stockings generally bite on the day of the stocking but TPWD trout do not.

Nice Bluegill Smithaven! Good job on getting into some nice fish. woot

Side Note: As for the trout bite. I had two trips last year while fishing the Guadalupe River where between myself and a friend we only caught two or three fish between the both of us. Both times it was the day of a stocking. I have much better results waiting a couple of days after a stocking. Fish seem to have settled down and are a lot more aggressive on the bite.
