Anybody heard the rumor Mercury will be phasing out the 2 stroke motors starting in 2017?

There was some talk about this on BBC a couple months ago. If I remember correctly, no one could say with 100% certainty that it was going to happen or not. There's always a chance...

I heard from a long time Mercury team member that the last year the 2 stroke would be in production was 2016. Just curious if I am the only one who heard this?

I believe the driving force is the EPA and emissions standards just like with Yamaha

Well good news is you get a new power head every few hundred hours like a sho or etec. Atleast til the warranty runs out....

Have you owned each motor?

Did you have bad experiences with each brand?

I really liked my Mercury. I have an Etec now and that motor is a horse.

Everyone has their comments and opinions. If you have an open mind and spend enough time on the water, you know they are all tools and are open to failure. I heard the pro xs will be discontinued unless mercury can gain some points in a different area for EPA. I know the 2015 motors were detuned to receive a better rating. For 2017 all motors will be receiving catalytic converters. That's why the new g2 etec is made with the big arch back. For when they have to add one.

I hope this is not true, would be hard for me to have any other engine. If I had to change it would probably be a SHO unless Merc comes out with a bad boy 4 stroke

I was told two years a go 2016 would be the last year for the 2 stroke by the Mercury sales rep for the boat builders in Arkansas and Tennessee.

Why would the G2 ETEC need a catalytic converter ? It has cleaner exhaust emissions than a 4-stroke, it produces 5 to 10 times less Carbon Monoxide (CO) while idling or trolling.

This comes as no surprise. My dealer told me that Yamaha would stop building two strokes in 2016 most likely. The EPA is a powerful entity folks.

CARB almost single handedly shut down Mercury Racing Division. Merc built the last of the high RPM screamers in May of 2015. They could not meet the low emissions guidelines set up by the EPA. Sad but true. I was a BIG fan of them.

I like my 250 SHO but to be clear there is nothing in the world that sounds like a 2.5 Merc Racing motor at 9,500 RPMS!!!
