Right now all I have are bait casters (other than my light crappie rods). Was thinking about buying a spinning reel but need justification for the fiancé to not get mad haha.

What rigs do you guys think are absolutely necessary to throw on a spinning reel? Also, what rod do
You couple it with?

My suggestion: if you need a "justification" for someone who is just your fiancée....run! JK, Happy Thanksgiving!

Shimano Sahara FE

Me personally, I use a Shimano Stradic and G. Loomis NRX. But to each his own!

I don't know if you're a beginner at spinning reels but if you are, the Sahara is a great starting reel. It's lightweight, powerful, and most important, it has a strong drag. It's gonna pair well with any rod you have.

Falcon Bucoo

I'd start with one of these rods. They are sensitive and super lightweight. They have a ton of models to choose from and you just can't go wrong with these rods. I can't describe to you how light these rods are!

Spinning outfits are great for a lot of things but I only use them for dropshots, shakey heads, tubes/darter heads, and shad raps.

Run anyway. Rent only do not buy. Up grades are nice on the rent side and easy to come by.

TAKE A PHOTO HOME NOT THE FISH. CATCH AND RELEASE
Set the hook first and ask questions later.

Hey hey hey, easy! We bought a boat, 6 reels, 6 rods, and 6 tackle boxes worth of tackle. She's awesome. She just wanted to know why I "needed" a spin reel so I had to come up with a reason haha.

Sorry. I was sitting watching the Cowboys which means I was bored. Got one that likes to fish w/you? Keep her. I have no justification for a spinning rod in my boat. Only in my canoe.

Spinning for fishing a drop shot and throwing light baits to bedding fish. Shimano Stradic with a Reel Time rods custom drop shot rod. Let her drop shot and she will never question you again about why you are buying more tackle. She will be asking to get more.

The Reel Time drop shot rod is a must. Call Ron and have him custom make one for her.

Drop shoting is my wife's favorite technique.

I can't recall what I saw or heard the "blend" is now for the pros, but it seems 60% bait caster, 40% spinning tackle. Aaron Martens' recent success, and others, likely influenced this a bit. Even KVD, a power oriented dude, has moved to spinning tackle more.

So: Drop shot, split shot, weightless worms, skipping under docks, flipping/pitching to light cover, most of the lighter plastic finesse presentations, throwing smallish spinner baits, inline spinners, small hard body lures, lighter spoons fished vertically. I'd also think that using spinning tackle for spy baits would be great owing to longer casts/slow retrievals.

Advantages: much lighter line choices, casting distance, casting into incoming and quartering winds, they rarely tangle line.

The Shimano Stradic has already been mentioned several time. A Stradic Ci4+ in a 2500 or 3000 would be my choice on a 7', medium/fast tip rod. It'll work for most of the presentations really well.

If you have little or no experience with spinning reels, watch the YouTube videos of Capt. Chris Myers for a primer on proper technique.

Brad
