Ok guys, new to this bass fishing thing on lakes. been mostly crappie fishing since i bought my boat. my question is, when do you use square bills?

also, i know its not exact science, but can you guys give a basic break down on where to look for fish on water temp ranges. example:

in 60-65degree water, look in creeks and use spinner baits or whatever

Something like that so i can atleast attempt to catch a fish. been out fishing 9 times and caught 1 fish

Square bills, spinnerbaits and chatterbaits in the creeks. Where are you fishing?

If your near Ray roberts we will schedule a time to go out in the next week or so and you will catch fish on a squarebill or the baits are on me.

Winter: 40-50 degree water:
- Run them slowly parallel to bluff walls on warm days (fish will move near the surface on a warm day, even though the water may be 50 ft deep below them) Bluffs facing south are the best, they warm faster than bluffs facing north.
- Find large, dark colored stumps and logs next to major creek channels closer to the open lake end of coves and bump each stump on the drop off several times before moving on (again, best on warm sunny days and for creek channels that wind through shallow flats). They will usually be positioned on the outside of major channel bends with the steepest drop and deepest maximum depth available for the immediate area.
- If you get a bite in the winter, saturate the area because the bass will school and stay in an area longer than any other time of the year.

Spring: 55-65 degree water:
- Banging a SB along south-facing rip-rap or rocky banks adjacent to spawning flats is very effective (find the best looking shallow cover next to a deep river channel or bluff wall just off of the main lake).
- Big stumps and logs on the edge of creek channels winding through warming shallow spawning flats are ideal. Points and channel swings are staging areas for fish moving into their spawning sites, and moving out after they are done.
- Red colored, and larger SB's tend to do well in the spring.

Summer: 70-85 degree water:
- Vegetation will be the number one draw for bass in the summer. If vegetation is not available, look for large woody cover that provides shade (such as big logs and piers, docks, etc). Always bang your SB into cover a few times (or several times for really good looking cover) because by now the fish will be more lethargic, pressured, and will require some temptation to induce a strike. Multiple presentations increases your chance of putting it in there just right to tempt them to bite.

Fall: 70-60 degree water:
- Find a major creek channel containing baitfish and focus your time on any cover, vegetation or woody, near that main channel. I have found that smaller SB's work better than the big beefy ones in the fall.

Squarebills are the most effective when they are just nicking the bottom or bouncing and deflecting off of hard cover.

Bass fishing can be frustrating to learn. I went 3 months without a fish last year then it was 15-20 fish a day. A lot will be determined by the lake also. You can cast every lure in your box but if you aren't casting where the fish are then you'll never catch one. Pay attention to signs that fish are there. Best bet is to go out with someone who can show you the ropes. Pay attention and ask questions. I fish Pool a lot and the bite for dinks was crazy this Summer and Fall. You could throw almost anything and they'd eat it. The last few times that I have gone, I have still caught fish in the same area but they were hardly biting the square bill. Changing to a worm and slowing down was the key.

If you can't get a backseat with someone on here, hire a good guide. They'll put you on fish and explain things to you so you can replicate it on your home lake.

Just bang 'em into stuff. If there's no stuff to bang in to, just jerk on 'em some real erratic like.

Might have to charge you double for the baits if you catch a smallmouth over 4lbs on your new squarebills smile
