My son and I ran across some striper (and whites) schooling at the surface on Canyon Lake recently. We typically fish for largemouths (catch & release) but we fished the school for a change in pace. I know TPWD has a consumption warning for striper on Canyon Lake but was wondering if folks eat them from Canyon as I've seen this warning for as long as I can remember.

Any of y'all eat striper from Canyon or is it not worth the risk?

Happy young man with a good looking fish.

I know several people that eat them, they just moderate their intake.

Here is the consumption advisory.
"Adults and children 12 and older are advised to eat no more than two 8-ounce servings per month. Children under 12 should eat no more than two 4-ounce servings per month.

Pregnant women, women who could become pregnant and mothers who are breastfeeding are advised not to eat any striped bass or longnose gar from the lake.

Regular ingestion of methyl mercury, the mercury compound in the fish, can harm the human brain and nervous system. Young children are especially at risk. The brain and nervous system in a developing fetus can be permanently damaged if the mother-to-be eats foods containing elevated levels of mercury during pregnancy.

Mercury is a naturally occurring element that gets into air and water from the weathering of the earth's crust, from the burning of fossil fuels and from some industrial discharges and emissions."

I would pass. Why eat something that you know is bad for you? I wont eat a fish from any power plant lake as a general rule.

Thanks all for the comments. We figured it was better to play it safe. It is strange to see the consumption warning on Canyon Lake which doesn't have a power plant or industrial sites on/near the water as far as I know.

The only fish on the warning ban is the Striped Bass and the Longnose Gar! That is it! The warning states to eight ounce servings a month can be eaten. Go figure! hmmm As already been stated it is better to be safe than sorry. eeks
