I've created a poll as there has been several discussions as of late on best equipment for windy day fishing. I'm curious to see what would be the better use of my cash in upgrades since either option is close to the same cost.
Setup is either a standard trolling motor with a PowerPole or Talon, doesn't matter if you have one or two, what matter is that you use it to hold position in the wind, or a GPS or iPilot style trolling motor that you can anchor/spotlock to hold position. Then there is the "I don't fish because it's too windy" or "neither one because I don't need that fancy stuff". Let's see what you think, ready go!

Now on edit, I do agree that both have their place, poles for shallow and TM obviously for holding deep. BUT, if you are fishing shallow 95% of the time, which setup would you go with?

It also depends on where you're fishing. If you're working deep structure, power poles won't do you any good of course, but an iPilot might. In shallow water where no trolling motor sound trumps trolling motor constantly turning on and off, power poles rule. I can't afford either myself, so I use an anchor or brush grippers and suck it up. If I had the money, I'd go with the poles because I prefer fishing shallow over deep when I can.

I have the Terrova and love it because, well...I suck at controlling a cable steer trolling motor and my boat is light and gets blown around more than a 21 footer does. Once I get busy with a fish in the boat or retying, I'd find myself blown away from where I needed to be. It works in deep or shallow water so it has been a great purchase for me. It isn't perfect though and in shallow water, I really wish I had power poles but they are too expensive for my old boat. Anchors are great but hate pulling them up. If I were fishing shallow enough for pp 95% of the time, that is what I'd go with.

Your post says A power pole or talon. One will let your boat rotate in the wind and you'd need an anchor or use your tm to keep you straight and in my opinion lose the stealth of a pp over a tm. If it were only one, my choice would be the terrova then.

That the reason for buying power poles, windy days and the spawn season for me.

I don't fish for the gals on their beds, I leave them alone then. I am not in search of that BIG bass,,,,,so I really don't need the poles.
I got a MK Terrova t/m and wouldn't be without one.
I fish in the wind all the time. The anchor lock works great, if I am fishing shallow, 80% of the time then I am usually on the T/M operating it. I have locked it down in some shallow coves and on a shallow flat and it works fine in those instances as well.

it all depends on what kind of fishing you are doing.

I fish into the wind with a standard foot control TM and as long as the waves aren't too big and I can stay in boat I am good to go.
