Banker, I know you work with TPWD on certifying record fish. Several years ago I caught a 1 1/2 pound white crappie that had 8 Dorsal Spines, I emailed a photo to Phil with TPWD and asked the question.

If this fish was big enough to be the new State Record what would it be, a White or a Black crappie?

He emailed me back and said their verbiage in the White and Black crappie description was incorrect and that it should have stated.

"White crappie normally have 5 or 6 Dorsal Spines. Black Crappie normally have 7 or 8 Dorsal Spines."

So the number of spines is not aways the correct way to identify each species.

Show that picture to the guys you deal with at TPWD next time you see them if you don't mind, to see what they can add to the odd looking crappie. She has 7 Dorsal Spines.

I think it's a black crappie that looks different than the others black crappie I have caught.

Thanks for your input Banker.

It's a cross between a "big ole goodin" and a "good ole biggun". My dad and uncle called those fish "Barn doors" Dang good fish no matter what you call it.

You just got to believe in what you are seeing. Then just keep hunting what you saw. Sight fishing.

The count of the dorsal fins is the last words on it as far as the state goes. The way it use to read is 5-6 fins white crappie, 7-8 black crappie, but now it is 7-8 black crappie and 6 are less white crappie. Just because you may get a big fish to turn in as state record does not mean it is the biggest ever in Texas. Right now on black crappie the state record on public waters is 3.92# and 18 1/2 inch's long but on private water it is 4.40# and 19 1/2 inch's long. And who knows what was caught in other ways.

Larry, I agree with what you said above, that is what the literature states on dorsal spines.

When get back to the office I will see if I can pull up the email from TPWD stating that the Dorsal Spines is not correct, or the only way to identify each specie.

Kirk, based on the picture you texted me yesterday, I thought you had a white crappie in your hand. Based on the picture I'm looking at now, I'm sold it's a black. The body profile is completely different. The only thing that is giving me trouble is the black "ear" patch that is so common on the whites is seen on the fish in question.

Thanks for the input! Learn something new every time. The first fish has the seven spines making it a Black Crappie. I was always told by TPW that Black Crappie have 7 to 8 spines while White Crappie had five to six spines. White Crappie also carry the vertical lines on their sides while Black Crappie have the splotches. Love threads like this. Again really learn a lot from some super anglers! thumb

I will touch base with Ron Smith(Inland Fisheries with Parks&Wildlife) after the holidays and get his input. hmmm
