I am just checking to see if the gate is still locked at Riverside Park at the dam at Lake Whitney. I was there a week ago on Friday and the gate was locked. I have tried to find a phone number to call and ask if it was still closed but can't find a number. Hopefully they will open it up so we can get our kayaks in the water and fish. They have been releasing water for several weeks so I am sure there are some fish that need to be caught!

When I know the gate is unlocked and I can launch my kayak below the dam. Hopefully, I can go on Wednesday or Friday. Maybe both if the fish are biting.

I found a phone number for the Corps of Engineers and actually talked to a real live person. They said Riverside Park is still closed.
The number incase someone else needs to find out about the park is
Whitney Corps of Engineers (254) 622-3332
Now I can call and not make a trip to find out the gate was locked.

I talked to another person with the COE and they said they didn't know how long the park would be closed. It was closed for the safety of kayakers and fishermen. It seems some fly fishermen were kayaking and got out of their kayaks to fish. The water came up and separated the fishermen from their kayaks. Hopefully they will stop generating everyday and open the gate to the park again so we can have access to the river and be able to launch at the dam.

Definitely closed for your safety. Several fisherman have lost their lives below the dam. It can get pretty sporty when the flow gets up over 2500-3000 cfs. Myself, I don't get on it at over about 2000 cfs, especially in the cooler months. Stay safe friends. thumb
