I am looking for suggestions for when fish are hitting weight on a Carolina rig. Have tried Texas rig, jig, and drop shot as an alternative with little success. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

to TFF !! I'm fairly new at using this rig BUT, man I got some great advice from the guide and fishing pro Darold Gleason while at Toledo Bend.
He showed me how to rig and suggested at least a 1 oz weight.
Sounds like from that advice from more than one other fisherman, that is pretty much the 'norm'.

Yes use a 1oz weight to keep it on bottom. The sand bass will peck at the weight but you will know when a bass hits your bait. Watch your line.

I second & third the choice of a 1 oz weight for a C-rig. Part of what makes the C-rig so effective is the big heavy weight banging around on the bottom kicking up silt as you drag it along.

It could be sand bass hitting the weight or most likely barfish (yellow bass) that start showing up on the deepwater humps & ridges this time of year. They are very aggressive and will hit anything shiny that comes near them. The good news is the big bass love barfish. If you are getting pecks on the weight, you are most likely in a good area for the larger bass.

Also try this. If you suspect you are getting bit on your weight, drop a jigging spoon down there and see what happens.

To keep them from doing that try painting your weights flat black. For some reason fish like to nip at the silvery colored weights.

Thanks for the replies. I am catching black bass but when the bite slows the fish seem to switch to biting the weight. It could very well be whites or yellows, although I haven't caught any on crankbaits or other lures I've followed with. I use 1/2 and 3/4 ounce weights so the 1 oz may be the ticket. As far as being able to tell they are hitting weight, strike is much harder, may pick it up n hold it or swim with it, swing n miss after swing n miss, hook usually still in bait or barely exposed with no visible teeth marks or damage to plastic. Again, I appreciate the replies.

When you get a bite it will feel like you snaged a wash cloth.
Reel down set the hook sideways, like backwards bass ball swing.
Allways at lest 1oz, 2oz deeper than 25".
