Hi im from Utah but I have some family members moving down by houston. I have been a kayak flyfisherman for a long time but Ive never fished in the gulf. I would be interested in doing for red fish. Anybody have any experience doing this. I have an assortment of 5-8 weight rods since i fish for steelhead. But I would like to be able to discuss with some experienced people what I should expect and possibly what I should be looking for in habitat. I use google earth alot, is it possble to search good habitat locations using that since I wont have to time to scout much on my own? Also are there any areas in texas with peacock bass? thank You, Chris www.aerialpursitflyfishing.com

If you catch a peacock, I'll be surprised. Water is too cold.
I can see an 8 weight working if you're fishing the intercoastal waterways or flats for reds. I've caught them in the grass flats outside of South Padre, but only on live bait (shrimp) or gold spoons. I've targeted them with fly rods before (10 wt) but never managed to catch one.
I've also never fished as far north as Houston on the coast, though, so your mileage may vary there.

Send a message to Neumie here on the boards, he fly fishes for them regularly in the Rockport area.

Fly rod weight is dictated by the wind and by the flies you are throwing. I generally chase reds with 5 to 8 weight rods, and on occasion I have been known to use a 2 weight, as well as a 10. During most of the year you can find them up in the shallow marshes and back lakes; that's where a kayak shines and where you can sight cast to them. Those spots are easy to see on Google earth. During the coldest months, as the bait moves out of the marsh and the duck hunters move in, the reds pull out a little deeper. Look for them over dark mud bottoms on sunny days. Look for structure such as reefs and guts that will hold bait; they will follow the bait. Look over the fishing reports here for the times you plan to visit and see what has worked in the past.
