What is your primary lure/bait(s) for late fall and winter when:

(A) fishing around grass/hydrilla?

(B) fishing a lake that doesn't have vegetation?

I mostly fish in one lake that has hydrilla, Decker Lake, and another lake, Lake Austin, that doesn't have a sprig of any kind of vegetation. Just interested in knowing what you guys rely on most from this time of the year on through the winter months.

Strike King Red eye shad in the grass. Rip it through and hang on. Works good as a search bait. On s slick bottomed lake, I like soft plastics and jigs....if you know where the fish are. If you don't, then a crank bait digging bottom works good as a search bait too.

In the winter I do a lot of slow rolling a spinner bait, it's good in the highland lakes that are all rock. Throw an A rig thru there too if you have the arm for it. Both will find you a couple of fish in the cold weather.

Other than that I crank and dropshot the rock areas in less than 30 fow that hold fish, then I'll throw a heavy c rig, heavy jig, or a magnum shaky head.

My main rules are - nothing too quick moving and if it's a slow presentation bait, it has to be slower than slow. And then a little slower. Don't be afraid to let your plastics soak for a few minutes per cast.

Fall and early winter: Squarebill 1.5 or 2.5, (depends on the forage fish in the area), in and around wood. 3/8 or 1/2 ounce spinnerbaits with double willows or a 1/2 ounce rattlebait around the edges of vegetation.
Winter: large sofa, television & remote in hand, and warm blankets in all situations. grin texas

A good rule of angling philosophy is not to interfere with another fisherman's ways of being happy, unless you want to be hated.

Boisarc, Doug, lconn, thanks for your replies. I get in a rut and it helps to learn what other people use.

When using a crankbaits in winter for a search bait, how deep do you fish it in a lake with a clean bottom?

B....Alabama rig, spoon, swim bait, football head jig.

If they're in more than 20FOW I'll use something other than a crank. So 20-22fow max for me. Past that and I'll use a c rig most likely.

That said, I don't do a lot of search baiting in the winter. They bite is already going to be slow. Your best bet is to graph some fish in a spot that you know usually holds bass and just start working them. Crank if they're shallow enough or throw an A rig. Then slow down with a big jig or shakey head.

you can stroll a crank bait down to 30-40 feet deep if you see them down there

but honestly fish in our area are a lot shallower than most think in the winter, find an area with a lot of bait and start in the 4-12' range

look for an area with a steep drops near deep water, deep being relative to the lake you are fishing

the fish are going to set up in an area where they have the protection of deeper water close by that they can move in and out of quickly with the littlest effort possible in the winter

think of it this way, a fat guy isn't going to live 2 miles from the fridge, if he did he wouldn't be fat smile
