For those of y'all that store your boat outdoors, do you cover/wrap up your lower units when it gets below freezing?
I store my boat outdoors, and I use it at least once a month during the winter, but I usually wrap the lower unit w/ a tarp when it's not in use...overkill?

you probably shouldn't have water in your lower unit to begin with

Overkill. Drain the motor at the ramp before you head home, trim it back down when you park it and don't worry about it.

I live in East Texas and do as others said above and wrap with an old comforter. Yes it's overkill but peace of mind. A lower unit is not cheap.

Wrapping it keeps it from freezing? A lower unit generates no heat so how does insulating it keep it from freezing?

Yes, I cover mine with a goose down comforter and put a pillow under its head. Are you guys serious? Trim it down so all the water will drain out of the powerhead and out of the LU and let it rip. The only way it will freeze and cause damage is if it has water in it.

Some of the older lower units - before the nose cone water pick-ups will hold water if tilted up. Especially to the extreme. The water is not in the gearcase, but standing in the housing. If it freezes hard enough, it will crack the housing. Tilting the motor down will ensure that it drains. If it is stored outside, even if you drained it at the lake rain will collect enough that they can freeze and crack if stored tilted way up. It takes a real hard freeze, but it can happen.
Covering it will do no good. No heat. Just drain it and keep it down.
By the way, that goose down is not hypoallergenic, and that SHO will start sneezing!

Wrapping it keeps it from freezing? A lower unit generates no heat so how does insulating it keep it from freezing? Ding, ding, ding! A winner. Outside your lower unit will eventually be the same temp as the air...unless you bury it in the ground also. :-). Keep your lower unit greese clean & lower the motor down while storing(don't leave it up on a motor toter). "Winterized"!

Lived in the Durango Co area for a few years and never had a problem with freezing. Lower the motor, drain the livewells and pull the drain plug... if that works @ 10 below for weeks at a time I don't think you will have a issue here in Texas.
