I've been catching shad at the ramps in the afternoons/evenings, in an effort to stockpile enough for the winter. Plan on putting some bluegill away, too.

I found out last year that getten bait in the winter is real easy, especially if you use a taped cast net. I had a lot of luck catching shad just by running the sonar along the main river channel of the lakes, sometimes on the edge and sometimes suspended right over the channel. That is one of the first places I check when looking for winter shad.

catch and freeze Perch, Shad in Salt water Ziplocks, and also some good Salted Garlic Chicken Livers. Not to mention just plain Chicken Breast, but find the cheap ones like Manager Specials. when all fails, grab some Hot dogs and put them on. I have heard of a Good Guy, on Texoma, using Little Smokies, and does well in the winter months.

Hey 44 Diesel, this may be a dumb question, but what do you mean by taped cast net? Are the shad pretty deep? I appreciate your help.

go look on castnets.com and you will see taped castnets......they are made for catching bait in the winter time in deep water situations.....we use them all the time and use the in 30 to 40 foot of water

A little pricy but worth it, I only use in the winter in the open water so I never really have to worry about snags. I can catch shad in 40ft of water if need be. The tape helps it stay open all the way to the bottom. Never really thought about them till OPTI PRIME on the forum mentioned em. GS-1500 is the best for me

I still remember when nobody else knew about taped nets and Everyone thought I was just amazing at catching bait. Now the secret is out and there aren't any more taped nets in the clearance section.
