I will be purchasing a side imaging unit next week. The 7 inch screen is what is in my budget range and there is a 50 dollar difference between the HDS7 touch and 899ci SI. I know lowrance has better down imaging and 2d and Humminbird has better side imaging. It may come down to personal preference and what I feel is easier to operate but I wanted to see what peoples opinions are of the two brands. I also know one requires only one transducer and the other requires two. Any opinions and experiences are greatly appreciated. I will probably use side imaging most of the time fishing for crappie, catfish, and bass.

My experience:

Humminbird:
Much better customer service if it breaks
Easier to use
1 transducer
Costs less
More reliable, breaks less from what I have read and I have had multiple units with no problems, had 2 Lowrances and 1 broke

Lowrance:
Better 2D

Imaging is equal, some will say Lowrance is better, some will say Humminbird is better

Have you looked into garmin? Not trying to start a brand war or anything, but I think you would like what you see and they should be right in price range as well. I can't comment on Lowrance because I haven't run one, I've had a bird and the imaging was nice but didn't like the 2d. Switched to garmin this year and loved them. But I just bought a new boat and it is equipped with birds.

Haven't really looked into garmin products. Humminbird and lowrance are both lowered in price due to new models out which makes it even better for me. I will probably be using side imaging the most.

Sandfly

Have only had my Helix 7 out 2 times but I have been impressed by the fish id on sonar. I have caught crappie in brush were it said they were both times. I know the hummingbird experts say it works and I really starting to believe.

Dave at shut up and fish can hook you up for 1.

I believe the 899 is being phased out. If so, the prices for them should drop more. Are you going to link units together or connect to ilink for trolling motor? If not then I'd look at the Helix models from Humminbird. They have bigger screens coming also.

I don't plan to link anything together. They are about 650 for each HB or Lowrance. Which is about half the price originally for both units. these two units are what I have been looking at for a while and that's about what I was wanting to spend. Ive been told by a friend who is a guide and knows his stuff, hummingbird has better Side Imaging and that's what he fishes with.

Thinking of going the same route with the 899 but I cannot find them at that price. Mind sharing where you plan to purchase one from?

Best I can offer, bird will still fix your graph in a few years when it breaks. Lowrance will tell you to throw it in the trash. But bird only offers a 1 year standard warranty, Lowrance offers 2 years.

I have 3 Lowrance models and my advice for you would be to get the one you're already leaning towards. Sounds like bird from your text, nothing wrong with that. Go to the electronics section and find Wayne P in the Hbird section, shoot him a pm and ask if the transducer that comes with the 899 is the one you'll want or if you need to swap that one in for the other one. He's the best graph man I know of on this forum.

Just my luck. I will be no where near a store on that day and no internet to order on line.

Another thing with Lowrance, not all sales include the lss2 transducer. So you might not be getting side imaging from it unless you've confirmed that transducer comes in the bundle going on sale, if not that could set you back an extra 200 or so for the side imaging transducer
