I want to plan a trip down to Falcon with my buddy this winter or early spring. He fishes from a yak and I fish from my 9.5 foot Bass Hunter with a little trolling motor.

Wondering where the best put in would be for us since our range would be limited? Like what put in has the best access for guys who cant go flying across the lake. grin

I have been to Falcon twice before and we stayed at the Holiday Inn Express in Zapata which was nice. However we fished from my buddies big boat.

Any thoughts on where to put in or other places to stay that have worked well for you?

All input is helpful. Thanks guys!

In the past I fished from a canoe out of the State Park. You get a little shelter from the wind there. I wouldn't know about Zapata though.

Given the limited range the Valeno has the most wind protection for a person in a small boat. I would also watch the weather and squeak into State Park if you know the weather is going to be good.

Aren't there alligators in Falcon? I would avoid fishing out of a yak at night!

I'd rather be fishing...

noidea

I am thinking last time we went, we were able to bank fish right near the hotel, all around the 83 bridge.

Depending on water level, bet we could launch from there.

If I recall there was a series of dirt trails people used for 4x4s and such.

Thoughts?

Are there any safety issues about taking a small boat down there, since you can not outrun anyone?

I have been down there before, few times.

Never felt in the least unsafe. And we fished the whole lake, Mexican side and all.

First time we had guides, both locals, who said there was not real danger at all, not anymore than any other lake in Texas.

I dont think the cartels give two hoots about bass fisherman in kayaks.... Not really their thing ha ha. And messing with Americans at all will only bring heat they dont want. No money in it.

Da, you are right about the 4x4 trails. Not sure when you went last, but the water is up pretty good so those trails are a little limited the days. If the island on the east side of 83 was completely out of water your last trip it is an island again. There are always fish in the Valeno I think it's a good place to start.

Ahhh good to know.

Last time I was down there was two years ago. We caught a few nice bass right of the bank there. The water was way down then compared to now I think.

There were no islands in that area at all last time I was there.

Thatll be a good starting point. And

From what I still remember from fishing it from a kayak several years ago, the fishing was equally good on either end. Still can't decide which I liked better, was very windy the whole time there but could find plenty of places to hide out.

Zapata Ramp

Caught my biggest bass on this crankbait I found 30 feet above the water line. Lake was 38 feet low at the time.

Within a mile or so paddle of Zapata ramp.

Not far from Zapata ramp.

Mexico side, easy paddle from Zapata ramp if it isn't too windy.

State Park ramp.. I fished with friend from boat on both ends of lake to get some ideas and then 2 days from kayak.

Campsites in state park.

View from state park camping area. Have no idea of water levels but there were plenty of folks that had driven much closer to the water and were fishing from shore in that area. Plenty of coves within a mile or two to stay out of wind.

Can't remember the name of this place but was in the boat at the time and it was one of the community holes that most know about. Beautiful area. Fishing wasn't that great on the trip from what my bud expected but we did manage 4 fish over 7 lbs for the 4 days. I thought the fishing was great. I would probably do the same thing next time.. fish both ends.. both different, both beautiful. Good Luck!

A good rule of angling philosophy is not to interfere with another fisherman's ways of being happy, unless you want to be hated.

We've kayaked there several times. Launched at the ramp at Oso Blanco, County Ramp just down the road, The Tigers and the State Park.

Those links from the Austin guys were very helpful as well.

You know when my bud and I get some dates together, thinking Jan. I will let you guys know.

The more the merrier right!?

If we had enough of us maybe I could get us a little discount on rooms, and of course safety in numbers on a big water like that....Some might say on land too. slinger

Thanks for the help fellas.

No gators in Falcon, but fishing at night is not a good idea. Most everyone will get off the water before dark 30. varies by the time of year. When you get to Zapata ask around where you stay. They will give you the info you need.

I've fished it at night.....but it was always within eye sight of the ramp. As others have stated......no telling what lurks in the night out there.
