The book this came from is very wrong and it's been updated multiple times over the years.

It varies greatly, depending on the strain of bass and where they live. The fish in the south prefer warm temps. But the northern strain bass and the ones living at a more northern latitude are more active at MUCH colder temps. Most of the lakes in the northern 1/3rd of the country never even get into the 80s and guys catch bass just fine up there. That facacta knowing bass book is terrible, all of the studies are skewed. I read half of it before I had to stop. The guys running the tests never followed proper scientific method. Read some into it, it's ridiculous.

Depends on the time of year but it's hard to beat the mid-60s for me

I couldn't disagree with you more. His analyses of chemoreception and it's CNS processing was novel. Can you elaborate on why you feel "all of the studies are skewed?" Can you also share how he violated the scientific method?

Can you also show me a scientific text published in 2002 that hasn't been updated?

There are so many variables involved that there may not be an ideal water temp. I've caught them in ponds with 35 deg water and ice around the bank up to 103 deg water at Monti. There is more likely a fairly wide range of temps that they are comfortable in. Ideal could be 65-85 deg, all things considered.

"Knowing Bass" is a great book and many could benefit from the insight that it offers. It's not as sexy as most other books and articles on bass or talking about the latest greatest baits and colors, but it gets down to the nuts and bolts of understanding why a bass does what it does.

I like fishing in water that is 64 degrees personally, spring and fall.

A good rule of angling philosophy is not to interfere with another fisherman's ways of being happy, unless you want to be hated.
