JUST GOT THE FEVER OF BLUE CATS AND WAS THINKING ABOUT CATCHING A FEW ON TAWAK. HOW BIG IS TO BIG FOR EATING. I HAD MY FIRST TASTE OF HYFIN BLUE LAST YEAR AFTER TAKING KIDS OUT ON PALESTINE FOR SPRING BREAK. WAS TOLD IF I LIKE HYFIN THEN I NEED TO CATCH SOME BLUES ON TAWAK. SO IF ANY ONE COULD LET ME KNOW THAT MAGICAL SIZE FOR THE FRYING PAN I WOULD BE VERY THANK FULL.

This has been a topic in recent posts and it gets different opinions, some say they eat the big ones, others say it takes a little more work to get the fat and red meat out, but a majority like to release fish that are ten pounds and larger and eat the smaller ones. For those that like to release the bigger fish (myself included) release it for different reasons based on ones personal opinion, some say they don't taste as good, some like to release so the larger ones can lay more eggs to ensure trophy blues for generations to come and others release so that others can have the opportunity to catch a trophy someday.

I think it's a regional thing - Similar to how many of us in the south call different sunfish a "perch" or the different names For a "yellow cat" or "flathead".

High fin is a blue cat. It's colloquial.

the big ones are very good to eat, I grill them on foil or bake them with butter and pepper, its all how you clean and prepare them. the belly meat is not good at all (in my humble opinion ) it is fatty and nasty. cut the red out and bake em up.

Imho I don't eat ones under 3lbs and over 13lbs. I target the in between. I fry mine i battered with zaterans lemon pepper seasoning. If folks are really worried about the population why not let the babies go back to grow into maturity?
If the fish don't bite your not baiting right...

That is kinda what we do usually. I don't like cleaning small fish of any species, so I rarely keep anything that has to be measured. I can't say I never keep anything under 3 pounds, but I rarely keep 12 inch cats, or 10 inch crappie/sand bass. This is a running joke between my and one of my fishing buddies. We have Dee keepers and Stacy keepers. My name is Stacy btw. I release the trophies as well, for all the reasons stated above plus the fact they are more work to clean.

Usually between 5-8 lbs gets you some good fillets. But that is just me.
The gene pool could use a little chlorine.
