In this video both the 3.5 and the 2.7 jump up to 5000rpms several times for about 30 seconds. But, they both stay at 3500 rpms almost the entire 7 minute drive

To keep the Tundra at peak torque at any given speed, you have to run a lower gear than the ecoboost. If you're happy towing in 3rd gear at 3500 rpms, more power to you.

3500 rpms in 3rd gear is about 55mph. Same with the ecoboost. At the same speed they tow the same load at the same rpm in the same gear...

I'm going faster than 55mph but I don't tow in 3rd and you can't hold speed in higher gears towing heavy loads.

You must have smaller tires.

Why does do all these motors even the ecoboost downshift to 3600 and then 5000 Rpm's when the load increases??? When the going gets tough all these trucks shift to 4th gear @3600(approx)...Can we agree on that? As shown in the videos above, when they downshift to 4th gear @ 3600rpms (at high load) which truck has the TQ advantage?

Hint: 4th gear(ft/lbs): Tundra= 1724 F150=1700

4th gear at 65mph in an EB with 3.55 gears is ~2700RPM. Many of the videos I've seen are "racing" up a hill from a stop. Of course the results are going to look more similar in that scenario-which isn't really at all like towing in the real world. As a matter of fact, the difference in 3/4 and 1 ton gas versus diesel trucks looks really close in those scenarios. The gassers really aren't that much slower(and sometimes are faster) than the diesels in this type of "race". But you'd have to be insane to attempt to argue that a gasser can really pull as well as a diesel. Hook up a 9500 pound travel trailer and set the cruise at 65. There will be a VERY noticeable difference in how the trucks respond to inclines. The EB will spool up and use some boost and hold a gear MUCH longer. Very much like a small diesel would. As a matter of fact, I feel that the EB is superior to the old 7.3PSD. It pulls just as well in the 2K RPM area yet has the ability to rev much higher and produce significantly more horsepower when needed.

What he said. You're watching a truck go up an incline that would make a 6.7L diesel downshift. 65mph in 5th is around 2200rpms, 65mph in 4th is around 2700rpm. 3500rpm in 3rd is 60mph.

Triple B, you are ignoring a simple fact, the ecoboost puts out 420 ft lb of torque at 2500 rpm and the IForce 401 at 3600 rpm. The EB puts out more power at a lower rpm and the gearing is relatively similar.

There is a reason diesels have been running turbos for years, its because what they accomplish. In bottom end grunt and fuel mileage I simply don't believe anyone can say the tundra beats the EB leaving all personal preference aside. If it is for long term durability and beating it day in and out, maybe it will fatigue that little 3.5, but we are talking light duty pickups that folks use to drive to work and pull a bass boat on the weekends and a TT a handful of times a year, not a hot shot rig.

Now you guys are getting stupid with your gas vs diesel comparisons. I assure you a Cummins or Powerstroke (6.7) will absolutely crush a gas motor in any kind of pulling contest. If you had a Powerstroke in 4th gear it would not downshift as mentioned in one of the above crazy comments.

I can't even fathom how you could try to compare the 2. Yeah maybe a 7.3 would be out pulled; but not a 6.7.

Who said a diesel running in 4th would downshift? I meant from top gear.

I can say stock for stock, the 3.5l gives both the 7.3l and 6.0l Fords a run for the money.

Stock 7.3 = turd, they are reliable and will run forever, but their stock form just plain and simple was not a powerhouse. Tuning makes a world of difference.

I wouldn't believe that in towing a EB would give a 6.0 a run for its money. The 6.0 has a 140 ftlb torque advantage and fewer rpm than the eb, that's getting a little carried away.

My last truck, 2006 FX4 6.0L PS:

When you spend as much seat time in both, we can compare. That truck you see pictured couldn't hold OD through the hill country. You couldn't lock one gear out on the transmission, you had to drop two when you turn OD off. I felt like I was never in the right gear. It was also very heavy. Tuned, it towed great.

My EB would tow that trailer up a brick wall in 5th gear.

Summary: I don't miss the 6.0L but I do miss that chassis.
