I'm looking for a new puppy that would be my new fishing buddy. Do any of you have a dog that goes fishing in the boat with you ?? What breed would be the best for me??

Most people who have hunting and fishing dogs go with black labs. I think its because they are good sized, and easy to train. You can get them to the point where you dont need a leash and if they get to far you stomp your foot and they come back to you. I've seen it in person many of times. Or you point where you want them to go and they go etc. However you can probably do this with almost any breed if you dedicate the time, I have 2 golden retriever mixes and they are great dogs. Make sure you put in the effort in the beginning give it 150% and it will be easier later on.

First time I took my dog on my boat, it pooped on the carpet. Haven't took her back since. I just don't think she liked to go very fast

My wife and I got a black lab puppy from DFW lab rescue, and she loves going in the boat. She has jumped in the water a couple times to retrieve the marker buoy I threw out, but for the most part she is awesome to take out. Makes it fun when I fish by myself. As mentioned before, spend time with him/her early and it will make it easy later.

I have a chocolate lab, never taken her on the boat. She sheds too bad and I would hate for her to put a hole in the seat with her nails. Love her to death but no way she's getting in the boat. I would suggest a 15 to 25 pound dog that doesn't shed.

Two of my friends take their dogs everytime. One is a Britney Spaniel and the other is a medium size poodle.

The Britney likes going fast and tasting the fish.

I have two labs that love to be in the boat. One is a Black lab the other is a Red Fox Lab. During the summer I do not take the back one in the boat because he gets very hot. They do love to swim.

Had a Black Lab named Gilligan who I took fishing all the time. She loved to pick up "save" anything that floated by so I always had a pile of sticks in the boat when we finished. She also loved inspect the fish before I released them and would even offer to clean (lick) them if I would let her. Sometimes if I was just a bit too exuberant when I released the bass she would take it upon herself to jump in and try to retrieve it for me (regardless of the water temperature). Just make sure you let the dog on shore to use the bathroom occasionally. One time while crossing the lake at about 55mph, she decided to go up to the front of the boat and squat and [censored]........right in front of me....I'm just glad the water was warm enough to go for a quick swim.....

I had a a Britney that loved to swim. Pool, pond, lake or river, it didn't matter. I took her fishing on the boat a lot. The first time I brought her in over the stern she ran through the boat and jumped back off the bow like a little kid. I learned to leave her in the lake for 5 minutes so she would get tired and not immediately jump back in.

In the springtime, we would fish for Crappie with a jig under a bobber. She knew when the bobber went under, a fish was on. She got better at watching the bobber than me. And yes, she had to lick every fish before it went back overboard or into the live well.

My heelers, like to chase things, no way I could take them on a boat. Every dog has a different temperament. My red is great, My blue only cares about playing, very hard to train, but she is also young.

Great dogs on or off the boat! They are the smartest and most trainable dog out there.

I agree a heeler would make a good dog in the boat, but if you have not ever owned a heeler before, they are VERY hard headed. Once you get them to about 3-4 years old, you won't find a better dog. They are extremely loyal and watch your every move, but those first few years can be tough!
