I guess I just don't understand your logoc. If you are wanting to catch a lot of fish and you are doing that with a tx. rig then why switch to a finesse jig and have the same effect? What is the point of switching from a tx. rig to a finesse jig?

I fish a jig because I want to catch larger than average fish, that is the point of fishing a jig.

Presentation wise. Some days they want a craw profile. I can either throw a craw bait on a trig or a jig. If I was wanting big fish I would throw a normal sized jig but I'm not worried about size and would rather catch numbers so I throw the finese jig. I like the looks and feel of a hog but want numbers

Like this "Fish-Zilla" caught today on a jig. My back seater caught a few fish throwing worms. This one fish outweighed every fish he caught today....added up. Hell, my next two "smaller" bass today each would have outweighed his total catch for the day. My jig caught 4 fish to his 7. My 4 fish weighed almost 20 pounds. His 5 best weighed in at 4.6. Lol.

Go big, or finish last lol n

I just started fishing a jig more this year. Whatever size fish I'm around I can catch numbers on either a jig or a t-rig. I think the key is that if there are larger fisher around, they will eat the jig before they let a small fish mess with it. So, whenever I'm catching numbers and they're smaller, I assume the bigger fish just aren't there and I need to do a better job of finding them.

I catch numbers of bass all the time on a green pumpkin bitsy jig with a green pumpkin zoom trailer...

Good topic, really good!

I read the personal anecdotes, the stories, but I wonder what everyone attributes their preferences (and the fish, too) to be based on?

For those who prefer a jig over a T-Rig, is it the skirt, fall speed, something about the presentation, its mass, where and how it can be fished, trailers used . . . ???

Why would more fish prefer one, larger fish the other?

Brad

Seems to me that the larger fish are not intimidated by the skirted looking buffet coming down the water column. IMO, the smaller ones are usually more reluctant at leaving the jig alone than the bigger fish are. I can flat out catch the small ones on a zoom speed craw and have a harder time catching the bigger fish with said craw. The jig will produce a quality bite the majority of the time.

all of the bigger fish, over 21", came from very shallow reeds and rock cover in 1-4 ft of water. With VERY deep water close by. Like 40-60ft. They were ambushing prey that would come up. Every bite took off under the boat heading to the deep water. I lost two just like this one, before I started to get the hint. Lol. Backed the boat off a little to give me more time to try and turn them.

Haha. I actually tried to boat flip this one. Almost [censored] myself when I couldn't! I started panicking then, because I had to hold the boat from hitting rocks, hold the fish on the line, and try and dig out the net from underneath life jackets and other stuff. I learned a lot again yesterday. Never too old. I learned to not bury a net. And don't count on a back seater to run a trolling motor.

Ya it's always nice to have a coangler who can run the trolling motor.

Jigs are a large profile bait. Just like throwing a full size swimbait they are geared towards those bigger fish. You'll still catch one or two barely bigger than the bait but I guess unless they are super aggressive those smaller fish won't hit them as well. For me I would rather throw a smaller bait because I feel like even though I catch more smaller fish I still will catch some nice ones. I think those bigger fish have better odds eating the smaller bait than the other way around. It's a total continence thing.

Do you think flipping a Texas rig craw in the same spots would've caught the fish??? I throw that more than anything by a large margij

That is similar to what I was thinking.. Did he devote the same amount of time fishing the jig as he did fishing "other things"?

I love throwing a jig but I do so because usually it will catch bigger fish than other techniques. For numbers it has been my experience that a drop shot or a shaky head will get more bites because they are smaller baits fished on lighter line and I just simply get more bites on them than the jig.

If you could get the fish out of the stuff I was flippin with a drop shot or shaky head you're good!

Honestly I'd rather flip a jig for the potential bigger bites, they were just eating it that day..

That is exactly why I throw a jig, for big fish. I drop shot for numbers.

I like fishing a jig more than a tx.rigged worm because it usually catches bigger fish and I love catching big fish. I don't know why the bigger fish like a jig so much and don't really care so long as the big fish keep biting it.

So now you know you need at least two rods. banana Fish both of them and let the fish tell you want to throw. Helpful Hint: If you are fishing grass, soft plastics will slip thru it better than a jig. If you a fishing wood, jigs. Use pork on the back of a jig if the water temp is less than 50 degrees. For shallow water jig fishing, I use pork year round. But that's me.
