Went to Fayette yesterday for one of my annual fall bass trips. Threw one ultra lite rod in the boat, and also had about a half box of nightcrawlers left from last Dunlap trip. Wanted to spend a little time hunting Red Ear, since my last trip was so unproductive. Water temp between 73 and 79 degrees depending on where u were on the lake. Wind non existent. Fished for bass from 8 til 11 am, then targeted a reed bed (for Red Ear) I did not fish last trip. Non stop action...caught 25-30 between 11 and 12 noon. Did not keep any, but 10 would have been my normal pan size. No real big ones like Banker and crew caught last month. One thing I learned is that not all reed beds are created equal. Have fished probably 15 reed beds and only 2 produced. Still have 15 to 20 to go to figure this thing out. Ended the day around 5 pm with 32 bass and the 25 Red Ear. The 5 best bass would have gone around 14 lbs all caught on Culprit 7.5 in Tequila shad color worms....

Awesome report! Was gonna fish Fayette today but Fred (Rionator)has to work! Fixing to head to Dunlap and then make a stop at Mcqueeney. Good job on finding the Redear. Side Note: Did you check the water temperature at the out take? Also Fayette had gotten a ton of rain over the past month. Over 12 inches.

Great report Vogey! I heard that water was being let out of Fayette due to all of the past heavy rain fall. Do you know if water is still being let out?
Again super report and thanks for sharing.

Don't know if water is being let out, but I would say it was up about a foot from normal, so I guess they are. One other note...those dang buzzards were all over the trucks at the Park Prairie park ramp when I got there. Complained to the maintenance guy, and they got someone down there to shoot some caps and scare them off. Last year they were so bad they scratched the pain on my truck, not to mention all the poop. Don't know if they have that problem at the other ramp...

Thanks for the report, I am going this weekend for a club tournament and have not been on Fayette all year. Last year the reeds were still pretty thin.... from your report I take it that they are coming back now. Can you tell me if the grass is coming back or is it all still real shallow?

There are lots of reeds, but they are in pretty shallow water...a foot or less. There is hydrilla growing in more places than I have seen in a few years. The key for me, was wherever I found shad popping on the surface there was bass underneath, and this was almost exclusively in the coves in 3-8 feet of water. And as always, there were some in the trees...

What a junk fishing day Saturday was, caught them on a verity of baits. ended up with over 50 between my wife and I. Biggiest about 3 1/2 pounds on a wacky worm. Thanks again for the report and advice!

One thing I learned is that not all reed beds are created equal. Have fished probably 15 reed beds and only 2 produced. Still have 15 to 20 to go to figure this thing out. Great report Vogey, thanks for sharing I would be interested in finding out what you learned about the reed beds. I don't have issues finding bluegill, greenies or long ear, but I've only caught one red ear on Lake Somerville and I didn't find any red ear on my previous trip to Fayette. I've done most of my searching with a fly rod, rather than worms, so that has added to the challenge.
