For me its usually junk fishing and covering water. If you get a couple of bites in an area then slow down and be more thorough. With so many relating to shad more this time of year they are moving based on bait movements a bit more. Start each day with a clean slate. By that I mean keep it in your mind that the fish are moving a lot right now. Here today and gone tommorrow in some spots.
Start at the mouths of creeks and start working you way in. If you find them halfway back in one then expect to have a good shot at them being in same place in other creeks.

Find a flat where the wind is blowing. Find a change in that flat. Be it near main lake, a hump, or trench or letdown and Square bill and TX rig the [censored] out of it. Those have been my honey holes as of late.

I do two things when I fish after a cold front: small profile baits and slow down. I do the same things I'd do normally, covering a lot of water, fishing creeks (start at the mouth and work your way in), but most importantly, fishing my strengths. The best thing about Fall is if you're like me and you excel best at shallow water power fishing, you can do pretty well. However, after a cold front you have to remember that those fish are finicky. It's best to slow down and downsize your techniques. I usually get by with just doing one or the other, but sometimes you have to do both. For instance, so far this Fall I've been doing really well on a large Lobina Rio Rico popper, a 1/2 War Eagle spinnerbait, and a Rapala Scatter Rap. Those didn't work yesterday, so I went to a Lobina Rico (smaller size) Popper, a Blakemore Swim'N runner with a small paddle tail, and a Bandit Footloose. I did pretty well.
Hope this helps

Wow, 242 views and 3 responses. Maybe I am not the only one that doesn't have this down yet.

Ok, so slow down, smaller profile baits, find the shad, mouth of creeks, a change in a flat, a hump or hole, square bill and Texas Rig the **** out of it.

Good place to start.

I'm in the same boat. Four hours on Grapevine yesterday and only caught babies. My usual spots were empty. I threw a ton of different baits too. At this point im moving out of my comfort zone and practicing how to work plastics. I've never been a huge soft plastic user so i figure i should lessen the learning curve. We'll see...good luck!

A bad day fishing is better than a good day at work.

Get a natural colored squarebill and spinnerbaits that matches the shad in your lake the best and cover water until you find them. Rocks with deep water near by has been the best thing I have found. It hasn't mattered if I'm in the main lake or halfway up a creek. If you know of an area in the lake your fishing that has shallow rock near a creek channel that is where I would start.

A good rule of angling philosophy is not to interfere with another fisherman's ways of being happy, unless you want to be hated.

As previously mentioned, finding the bait is a priority.
Sunny post front day, I'll look for stained water (stained water retains heat and warms up faster than clear water). Look for cover that conducts and retains heat: wood, grass, pads, reeds etc. Small jig flipping wood. Small pegged creature flipping pads/reeds. Weightless or light split shot plastic over the grass and heavy drop shot punching the grass. Sometimes going slow with a suspending jerk bait over the grass can be good; other times a reaction bite to a lipless or squarebill is better. The deep fish can be less effected by fronts so look deep also.

Many have said it already.

Smaller baits for sure. Slow down. If you are flipping, flip as tight to cover as you can. Shade lines and grass lines are your friends.

As several have stated, find the bait. BUT find the bait that has fish working underneath it. Also, I've found that post cold front, fish hold to rocks really well. Find some rip rap and work it.

Lastly DEEP fish aren't effected as much...if you like to fish deep, do it.

My main problem with cold fronts has always been that the fish won't commit enough on the strike.
Trailer hooks can help on some baits. For sure down size the lure and line.

Try to fish as soon as you can after a front comes through if you have to fish it. The more that high pressure settles in, the more inactive the fish will be and the smaller the strike zone.

"..The pleasantist angling is to see the fish
Cut with her golden oars the silver stream,
And greedily devour the treacherous bait.

This time of year fish are really keyed in on shad. Downsizing can sometimes be good, but it can also hurt if you are throwing something significantly smaller than their normal forage. I'm under the impression that fish still want the same forage, they just don't want to work hard for it on those post frontal high pressure days. I'll typically use the same baits that I was using before the front, but be more methodical with my presentation and try to fish as tight to the cover as possible. I have always been a big believer in "match the hatch".
