Hey guys, I have a 2008 mercury optimax 200, I've had my boat for a little over a year. I checked the oil reservior and it showed to be about a quarter full. What would be a good oil for that motor that ya'll would recommend? As always, I appreciate the advice.

Mercury recommends premium plus the synthetic blend for that motor.

You will get a lot of opinions on what to use. Fact: Merc REQUIRES any TCW3 oil. They RECOMMEND their own DI oil(direct injection). It has additives to prevent deposits & is stupid expensive. If you chose DI as I do buy it in bulk for way less @ Rockwall Marine.

They recommend DFI for Optimax Motors now, in "08" Premium Plus. FACT

Just make sure you use Quikleen #1 an #2 with every tank of gas. Keep your oil tank with plenty in it.

i use regular ole pennzoil found at walmart in my 250 pro xs for 16.99 a jug it is tc-w3 certified and synthetic, mercury nor any other manufacturer can deny a warranty claim due to you not using their products as long as you are using a tc-w3 certified oil... i dont believe in/use the snake oils, use a good reputable oil manufacturer than meets the certification and your good to go...... the dfi is hype along with the quick cleen and everything else, not worth the money in my opinion..... i will get bashed for these comments but it'll be by the people using the dfi oil

There are things that i keep a close eye on. Looking for fishing line in the TM prop and gas engine prop. Oil level in the tank and lack of water in the lower unit oil. Trailer bearing grease. I have caught problems on all , before it killed something. Much cheaper to do it that way. Keep them clean and full for peace of mine. A common cause of bearing problems occurs when a boater drives a couple of hours to a destination, then immediately launches their boat. The (wheel) hub is hot, and then it’s put into cold water. A vacuum will pull water past the (bearing) seals, and then it condenses there. If the water is left in the grease bearings will rust causing them to fail even if grease is present. You asked about oil but i keep the tank full.

TAKE A PHOTO HOME NOT THE FISH. CATCH AND RELEASE
Set the hook first and ask questions later.

Not gonna bash you but you can get the Merc/Quicksilver Premium Plus at Wal Mart for $19.99 a gallon. I figured I will just pay the $3.00 difference. I fish a lot and I doubt that ends up being maybe $50 a year I am paying more for. Its worth it to me to use what Merc suggests.

well if it is only 3 $ I would agree with you, I wonder why our walmart has it for 28$ and yours is 20$. I would run the quick silver at that price, is that a sale price or ?

The last time I looked at Walmart their Mercury Premium Plus was over 32 bucks. Their Premium oil was 19.97 or something like that.

The Pennzoil Premium Plus is a premium oil at much less than any of the manufacturers oil.

You can get the 2 1/2 gallon jug at Academy for 54 dollars. I just bought a jug a couple weeks ago.

I usually get it at Academy. Its $19.99 there. Seen it at WM at that price too. WM has the cheapest price on the Merc fuel additives too.
