There are talks of Bass Pro Shops to buy out Cabela's. Bass Pro is currently talking to investor banks to purchase the company. I guess time will tell. Who ever thought back in the 60's BPS would become the leader in the fishing tackle industry.

You never know what will happen. I remember in the early 80's when I was a kid thumbing thru that Bass Pro Catalog every day after school looking at all the good stuff. Fast forward to today, and I rarely even look at their stuff. Too many other places out there with quality American and Texan made products at half the price.

I doesn't matter to me. I only go in there when I want to actually pick up something and look at it, then I go home and order it online for a lot less $$$.

I try to only go when things are on sale. Other than that its to look at things I want and see if its worth it.

One of BPS's employees asked me how long I had shopped at BPS. I told him since it was just a catalog in the 70's. He wasn't even born then. I found my first one at Bull Shoals in a cabin we stayed in. It was much better than the Sears catalog.

I remember back in the early 1980's when Bass Pro was actually selling franchise's. I thought seriously about buying one. Then it dawned on me that I would be competing against the catalog, and as a franchisee, I could not buy stuff from them for the same prices they were selling it for in the catalog. There was a place in Decatur Illinois that started out as a Bass Pro Shop Franchise. The place's name was "Mikes Bass Pro Shop". After a couple of years, he dropped the franchise due to costs. His wife told me that they hit it just right and were able to use the BP name to start their business. I think the place is now called Mike's Tackle Box or something like that.

I have found BPS marking up the MSRP on many items. I suppose that is so when they put it on sale for a few bucks off, they are still getting full retail for it. In the days of Internet shopping, there is no reason to pay full MSRP for anything, lower prices, no sales tax, lots of itms with free shipping.

The stores are for tourists and the merchandise is over priced. Lot of overhead to cover that I do not want to pay for. If I buy something at the store I have to put up with "what is your phone number?" If I am really cranky I will ask why the #*&$ they need it. Most of the time I just say that I do not have one, make one up, or tell them that I do not give it out to strangers.

I asked about the phone number thing and was told it makes it easier to make a return. B.S. If I have receipt, they will take it back, phone number or not. Academy does the same thing as Cabelas. only they are asking for your zip code. I always hit cancel and bypass it. I fail to see the relevance of my purchase to what part of town I live in. A lot of people have no concept of how much personal information they are giving away by sucumbing to these seemingly innocent requests. I tell nothing.

A lot of people have no concept of how much personal information they are giving away by sucumbing to these seemingly innocent requests. I tell nothing. I don't provide a phone number but I do give a zip code. It is used to determine location of customers. If enough customers come from a given area code, they may build a store in that zip. This is exactly why Cabelas is in Allen, Tx. Cabelas wanted a store between the Bass Pro stores and used zip codes from catalog sales and demographics to look in the Allen, Frisco, Plano, Mckinney area.
