I'm going to be fishing Grapevine soon from shore and plan on using jigging spoons in deeper water. Never used spoons before, are there any ways to typically avoid most snags on the bottom?

Man I've got a lot of question for you, so you're fishing from the bank. How deep of water do you think you can cast into? And why are you choosing to use a spoon? It will be darn near impossible to not get caught up a lot, those things sink like rocks and are called 'jigging spoons' for a reason. Not meant to be cast from shore unless you're just going to burn it back above the bottom, which defeats the purpose in the first place.

If we know how deep, and what type of fish you're after, someone can probably provide some good suggestions.

I was wondering the same thing. Spoons are mostly used for vertical jigging.

If you know there is a steep drop off at the bank you can fish a slab or spoon. I did at Tickey Creek park at Lake Lavon when the water was up and south wind was blowing at my face. Use like 30lb braid and you can usually pull hard enough to free it or bend the hook out. I try not to let it hit the bottom for more than a second when I was doing it. Its not ideal to do this though as stated they are more for vertical presentation like from a boat or something.

This was a steep drop off right off a point. If I snagged anything I just remembered not to cast there again. But definitely use braid it you want to keep your slab-spoon or whatever. Good luck. Hope you don't get hung up.

I was going to do this off of Katie's Woods Park where the cliffs make the depth about 40 feet where the fish would be when it gets cold. Is there a better strategy than that?

You might try swapping out the treble hook for a single hook and bring some kind of plug knocker to try to free it up when it snags.

Fisherman13 is right on the dinero!$$$ kastmaster 1/2 ounce works for me trying different technics to find a pattern and hang ups! They may want it fast,slow bouncing on the bottom on top?! This is what I do at tickey creek points. Great place to do this for sandies when they are there!? Good luck! Trial and error will pay off!
