Does anyone else wash their hands before handling lures? I carry a bar of Primos hunting soap on the boat and wash my hands with lake water before rigging up. I don't wear latex gloves or wash continuously throughout the day unless I get gasoline or some other noxious crud on my hands. I was wondering what your opinion on negative scents & odors is.

  • Does anyone else take the time to wash up before fishing?
  • Do you believe human scent has a negative effect on bass?
  • Do you believe human and other scents/odors (L-Serine, gas, oil, etc.) can be transferred by handling lures enough to negatively impact fishing success?
  • Do you believe commercial or homemade attractant/scent can mask or diffuse negative scents/odors?
  • If you do wash, what kind of soap do you use?
  • Do you believe there are kinds of soap that can actually contaminate a lure and impart it with a negative scent?
  • Do you wear gloves when handling lures/tackle to avoid odor contamination?

Inquiring minds want to know...

Not certain on how a scent affects lures, or if fish can even smell...however, if you want to get an odor, like onions, gasoline, etc. off your hands, take a stainless steel spoon and hold it in the stinky hand...while holding it, run cold water over your hand and the spoon for 30 seconds...smell will be gone...well, most will. Rancid oil takes a bit longer, and you can use lotion after the spoon trick, then wash your hands with soap, and the rancid smell should be removed.

I keep a bar a soap in the boat. Don't know what kind it is. I will wash my hands if I have to mess with batteries or something on the motor. And other than that I will wash if I have to take a dump while on the boat.
And I try to remember that a fish brain is the size of the tip of my little finger

The very reason I use a fish attractant has nothing to do with attracting fish, and everything to do with masking human scent.

It's kind of like the guys that hunt scent free vs the guys that don't. Some swear it makes a difference to wash and some don't. I do know that fish can smell though.

Most of the time I just dip my hand in the lake, rub lake water on them and air dry. And also use The Fisherman Soap.

If I put sunblock on I'll wash my hands with a bio-degradable soft soap. I do use garlic spray on my soft plastics.

I leave a squirt bottle of foaming hand soap in a compartment. Real handy, neat and still foams up after well over a year in the boat. More for washing my hands after applying a strong smelling sunscreen(especially the spray-ons). More concerned when fishing slow moving jigs or soft plastics. For anyone who thinks I'm "over thinking" things: I rarely actually remember to use it :-). This type of soap is handy in the boat. Just rinse w/lake water.
