I went to get an oil change last week, and the folks there told me I needed to get new ball joints. So I went home and took to youtube to learn about this, since I have never messed with them. Well, after all the videos, it seemed like something I could take care of. So I ordered all needed parts and rented a ball joint compression tool from O'Reillys. Well, the top was no issue but the bottom has proven to be a real bear. So I wanted to see if anyone has had any experience with doing this and have some advice for me.

2004 Dodge Ram 1500 5.7 HEMI. The issue is that I am not able to separate the steering knuckle from the ball joint.

Did you get this figured out? If you still have or reconnected the upper to the steering knuckle before trying to take the lower section loose it most likely wont come loose. Big hammer and bang on the knuckle around the joint and it usually pops off.

Check and see if it is on a recall.

What HaulinBass said sounds like a place to start. Did you check them or just start replacing? A lot of them fellas don't know their but from a hole in the ground.

Finally got it done by using two ball joint separators (pickling forks) and big hammer. But it was such a pain that once I got that side put back together again, I called it quits. I will take care of the other side some other time. Thanks for the input.

I verified that the ball joints did indeed need replacing before doing it. I always take what those guys say with a grain of salt, since I know most of them are just trying to make a sale.
