I am looking to do some offshore fishing once I get more experience. I came across this 1977 30 ft SeaRay Weekender and wanted to ask some experienced boaters if this boat is offshore worthy. Looking to trade it for my 1966 dodge charger. My dream is Tuna Fishing out of Galveston or Freeport. I have read alot about Boomvang 100 miles out. If unexpected storm come, will this boat be safe. 2 new 440 engines, will be adding fuel bladder. Just want to know if an experienced captain is navigating this boat, is it safe in an unexpected storm. Can it handle uncomfortable seas.

That pointed-down bow looks like it would spear a really big wave and cause you a world of hurt in truly rough weather.

I'd say you should pass on this as an offshore tuna fishing boat. Sorry.

Maybe maybe not...depends on the overall condition not just new engines.
With saltwater boats, especially one that old, you have to watch the condition. Wiring and such can cause you lots of issues even with new engines.

My suggestion...spend the money on a good surveyor. They know what to look for and the slight cost could save you lots of headaches and heartaches. I don't think I'd ever buy a saltwater boat w/o a surveyor checking it out first.

didn't I see this boat on 2cool? That 66' charger sips fuel considering what those 440s will gulp per hour.

I seen guys get stuck in better boats than that... but.... if you can get it for under 30 grand we can probably catch some tuna. I can run that boat no problem and fix anything that goes wrong I'd take it offshore I'm familiar with the boat I'd say 2 miles per gallon if you let me drive I'll pay for the gas!

Fuel would probably be the biggest concern with that boat. It might do 1 MPG but you probably better count on about .5-.75 MPG.

I owned a Sea Ray just like that with a tower. Mine had 350 engines. Fuel will be the problem. Have to secure everything in the cabin in rough seas. Fished Block Island and Montauk waters. Mine had a space for an extra fuel tank about 100 gallons in the middle between the motors. Boat ran better in rough seas once you got it on plane. Very hard to put the nose under due to hull design. If you should spear one it all runs off without getting a flood inside. Be sure to have a surveyor check the stringers. I just about gave mine away instead of bringing it to Venice. Boat was too slow for here and not a diesel.

I would pass on that boat for the Texas gulf coast. One you would have to have 400 to 500 gallons of gas on board. The floaters are 117 nautical miles from Freeport i would expect that boat to get about .75 mi to the gallon. Second gas inboards are unsafe 400 gallons below deck and ignition source down there also can go boom.
I would look for an inboard with diesel or outboard twins or better.
