79 evinrude manual release screw Apparently the threads are stripped because the screw will not tighten at all, is it a total loss or can these be retapped?

The only pic I happened to have on my phone doesn't show much but the release screw is on the very right side

I have never seen one stripped. Best bet would to find a good used trim system. What size motor is it?

You might tap the area above the valve and put a short bolt on top of the valve to hold it down.

Would the motor have to be in the up position to make the screw go back in maybe ? I didn't try that but just had it cross my mind but I'm not with the motor to check.

Update on this issue I removed the unit from the motor planning to try and retap the threads and noticed the cclip was the only thing wrong with it, somehow it allowed the bolt out of it while the clip stayed on. I pulled the clip and the bolt tighten perfect then I put clip back on.
