Hello everyone, I'm turning to y'all for advice! Recently I bought my dream boat.. or so I thought. I bought a 2006 Skeeter 21i with a 2006 Yamaha Vmax HPDI, from a guy down in San Antonio. The guy I bought it from was super super sketchy after the sale when I needed to get in touch with him for some additional stuff concerning the title. Everything about the sale has been bad... especially now.

I bought the boat with 184 hours on it... at 192 hours I had a catastrophic failure. I didn't think it would happen to me, but I blew the power head. There were literally chunks of metal down inside the engine when we took off the cowling. So after taking it to two mechanics, its been diagnosed that to fix it I need a new Crank Cylinder Assembly (60X-W0090-15-1S), two cylinder heads (60V-11111-00-1S), as well as gaskets, fuel filters, etc. but between the heads and the cylinder assembly, I'm looking at over $9k in parts. For someone who just graduated college, I'm not in the position to drop that kind of cash immediately.

So to those of you who have blown a Yamaha power head and didn't have any insurance help... what did you do? Any recommendations on companies to order parts from? Does anyone know of any shops that sell refurbished parts, or have one of these broken engines lying around, but with a good power head?

I tried reaching out to Yamaha but since it's out of warranty they basically told me to pound sand.

At this point I'm at a loss as to what to do. I my have to simply winterize it, cover it, and wrap it in tarps, and leave it for a very long time until I can save up for parts.

Any advice or recommendations from TFF would be appreciated.

edit: Sorry mods, didn't realize I wasn't posting in boats and motors, please feel free to move

In your case you might be better off to repower. If your credit is decent you should be able to get a loan against the hull with little down. This will probably put you upside down on the boat/motor combo but its better than just sitting in the driveway with a cover on it. Obviously if you already have a loan against it this may not help but worth a look anyway. My first boat was an 2004 Pro Craft with a 175 Merc Black Max I had the ECU go out on it less than a year after I bought it and it fried some other stuff to the tune of $2200.00 I didn't have that kid of money at that point in my life so I had the Credit union that it was financed through add it to the end of my note. I did have enough equity in the boat but as the loan officer put it they would rather loan me the money to fix it than for them to have to come get it shocked guess they thought I might lose interest in paying for it if I Couldn't use it lol

Repower. For about 9000 you should be able to find some used 250s. Plus if you repair yours and don't fix the cause for the blow up, it can let go again. They usually fail from injectors getting leaned out or piston ring pins letting loose. That's how mine have blown.
Whatever you do, fix it asap, or you will feel like puking everytime you see your beautiful boat with a blown motor on it. Life is too short to feel like puking.
I could use your trim and tilt unit if you part out your motor. And guys are looking for lower units all the time.

Thank you, I just called them and they were super knowledgable, but unfortunately said they won't work on HPDI's.

Pm mark perry on here, I may have givin you the wrong link. There is a company down by cedar creek lake that rebuilds them in house for a lot cheaper than a new power head cost.

That's them, but they recently decided that they wanted to step away from the HPDI work.

Tough position to be in. I've been there myself.

You can part out your engine for $1500-$2500 and then go find a used motor for $5000-$7000.

Or you can have a good shop rebuild yours for a steep price but have a warranty on it.

That sucks! You might want to check with Chris Carson Marine in FL too. You might post in the Yamaha section on BBC to see if anyone else has any thoughts. Here's the bigger problem though. There is a reason that the engine blew. If you just replace the power head and don't completely go through everything, there's a good chance you'll pop the new power head too. Hydro Tec sometimes has used motors. You could give them a call to see if they have anything available or coming.

Tough situation. If it were me, I would start looking for a used non-HPDI motor first and the part out or sell complete your HPDI. I have a Ox66 and Yamaha makes a good motor, but I haven't been a fan of their HPDI series and wouldn't buy one even though there are some that have had no problems with them.

Here's a guy that took his HPDI to Hydrotec and was pretty happy with the results.
