Went to change out my lower unit fluid this week. It came out milky green. Never had this problem before. How hard is it to put new seals on one? Always done my one water pumps, carbs, fuel lines and about anything else needed. Can't decide if I want to tackle it or pull it off and take it somewhere. Motor is a 1977 Johnson 175. Thanks in advance for any input.

Mine leaks a little too. I use a good synthetic gear lube that doesn't seem to allow the water to mix. I will drain off the water after it has a chance to settle to the bottom (water is the first thing that comes out on mine). I drain off the cup or so of water and add gear lube back. When it gets down to the teens temperature wise I will drain it all out and refill later. I also change it all out twice a season between March and September. I always use new nylon washers every time I open a screw. I need to get some more, thanks for reminding me!

Put the plug in.

You will have to find out where your leak is. Requires pressure testing with a special tool. Most common is the prop seals. Inspect the prop seals for signs of leaking or damage. Other than that the only choice is to replace all of the seals.

What type of oil are you using? Thought about doing something similar at least until I can get it fixed.

Thanks for the input. Will check the prop shaft. The motor still has all original seals in it. I figure 37 years was a good run. You know about what it runs to get new seals put in one? If I pull the lower unit and reinstall it.

Keep running it with water in it. Those gears aren't stainless, they'll start to corrode, and that will pretty much be their doom.

Fix it before you run it anymore, you haven't found some miracle cure, you've been lucky.

Unless you wanna pop for a new lower unit you need to take it off and get it fixed. Water diluted oil will not lube it correctly and will allow the gears and bearings to corrode. Bearings don't last long when they get rust pits in them. You can pay em a little now or pay em a lot later, it's your choice.
