I use a Browning Ultra-lite, works great. 10lb Power Pro hi viz braid (2 lb diameter) and flouro leader from 2-8lbs depending on fishing. Casts great, but heavier diameter braid doesn't work at all

There are no fish in sonic pond EDIT: Except 1 20lb catfish

Do you want a spincast or spinning reel? Spinning reel I would go with a shinano whatever your budget will afford. Don't have much use for a spincast.

+1!!! on both

Shimano has 2 or 3 steps up to match yer budget. Go with Sahara level if you can.
I like 500's for crappie.
Sedona or Sahara's will be fine. Very smooth, light weight and strong. Great drag.

Open face reels are the way to go for crappie fishing, we have all been down this road.

I prefer the Pflueger President in a small size, I think it is a 6920.

I use the Daiwa Goldcast spincast reel spooled with 10 pound Power Pro braided line on a Shakespeare Agility 7 foot graphite rod for crappie.

I do not understand the comments that braided line will not cast on a closed face reel. I use a Zebco 11 reel spooled with 10 pound Power Pro for sunfish, the Daiwa Goldcast 80 for crappie and trout, and Garcia Abumatic 170's spooled with Power Pro 40 pound test for catfish and carp. All cast quite successfully. I do use Reel Magic lubricant on all my braided lines.

If you can find one a Compac RF70 is a good reel for jigging crappie because it lets you return to the same depth quickly.

Closed face reels have a number of advantages over spinning reels if you buy good quality reels and develop the skill required to use them effectively. If you buy cheap plastic reels and do not take the time and practice required you will be disappointed.

Have you tried PowerPro 6/20 on them? I've tried it on Zebco 11, Pfleuger US,and others and it will not flow off the spool.Does the line conditioner really help that much?

I want a spincast reel, I cannot use spinning due to a wrist injury.

I agree spinning is the best though.

Then follow smithhavens advice ! I would get the best quality you can afford though! I'm sure some of the higher end ones have quality features for sure! I remember when the 202's were pretty good ! Lol
