Had something happen to me this weekend I have never had happen before.
Got to the lake went to start the boat and all I get about 1/16 of a turn on the fly wheel from the starter. Swapped batteries over and did the same thing. Tried it with a booster and it did the same thing. Check every connection on this thing for 30 min, even pulled the key panel out to check all those. Tapped the starter and the solenoid, and nothing. Kept trying till the starter got hot, stopped playing with it and let it cool off before I burned something up. Tried it again and started just fine. Started for the rest of the day no problem.
Till the next day and the it did the same thing. Messed with it for a while then it finally broke loose and had no issues for the rest of the day.
Signs of a bad starter??

could be just a dirty starter shaft..clean it and put some LIGHT oil on the shaft and starter drive..(not WD40) if not, I'd say starter needs brushes...

its just a starter..any auto repair shop ( Auto Zone, ect) can test in on their work bench..of course you'll have to take it off..look for a Generator/Starter repair shop in your area..

You already know that your 12V and the ignition switch is good because it does try to start and sometimes will, so eliminate that. Since you already have to take the starter off for cleaning testing, replace it. it's unlikely you will find an alternator shop that will rebuild a marine starter and by the time you pay to havea marine shop rebuild it, if it is even possible, you've paid for a new starter. Just replace it and go fishing.

I used to take a bunch of alternators and starters for airplanes over to Ft Worth Generator and Starter. I figured I would give them a call this afternoon, Kinda thought if anyone can rebuild one, they could.

Well Shop said that everything on it checks out fine. I am going to wiper her down and lube her up and slap her back on. Hopefully that resolves it.

FK, clean ALL your ground/hot connections, sounds like you may just have a bad start circuit and it is only making full contact intermittently. buy some battery post cleaner and some sealer, spray all connections on the main cable with protector after you clean them, do same for all starter connections.
