phones get turned off in my boat for the most part.
I like a little music - If I am nailing them one after another - why not enjoy a little Pantera!
Whether you think you can or you can't, you are probably right.

I love to have my day of fishing be a complete get away without "outside contact" but reality is sometimes this "irritating" phone allows me to multi-task and go fishing when I would have otherwise not been able too. As far as how much time my partner spends on his phone: who cares?

You would not like fishing with me, there are usually several calls that I take, especially on week days, if you are self employed you will understand what I mean, as far as music, I don't mind a little country every now and then. This. But it does [censored] me off when my phone rings but most of the time I can only slide out during the week and have to take work calls. If I'm in someone else boat thpigh, I always ask them ahead of time if I can take a few calls if need be. Noone has ever said no.

you know on the phone deal - phones off if tournament fishing - fun fishing, all bets are off.
Whether you think you can or you can't, you are probably right.

if I am fishing on weekdays....I will be taking multiple calls.
Not sure how anyone in sales can completely "unplug" during business hours
better to be on the water on the phone, than in the office blogging about how I want to be on the water on the phone

I wish I could leave my phone at home. I work for an oilfield service company and it's 24/7/365.

No big deal here. I don't talk on the phone. I do listen to my Bluetooth speaker and sing along with the music, sometimes it may get a little louder than it should but who cares i am catching fish and having fun. If you think my radio is keeping you from catching fish, maybe you need to work on your presentation. As far as what the guy or girl on the back of my boat is doing, i haven't a clue i am catching fish, well and probably singing with hank, hag or charlie. If you are fishing when i am fishing you are not a PRO you shouldn't take things so serious!!!!

I love when my partner is constantly on the phone. MORE FISH FOR ME. But not during a tournament. Needa put that thing up.

I put an Infinity system in the boat...had one of my best days of fishing on Texoma with Pandora playing all day long.
I don't think the fish are bothered any. I think we overthink the pea brained prey.
I'm glad my music will keep the other boats away. Added bonus?

I'm old, so "old school" in mentality. I don't set the rules on any boat but my own.
In my boat, if it's a tournament, there won't be any radios on or ear-buds with music. I brought a partner who needs to be as focused as I am (or maybe I need a new partner). During a tournament, phones should go into "airplane mode" - transceivers disabled with no calls other than emergency use.
If it's not a tournament, I can see the need for a partner to have limited necessary business activity if he/she can't get out of being on-duty for calls, but I should learn of this in advance. No constant stream of personal calls/texts all day long, especially with a ringer on. If the phone will be like that, it will have to be silenced and ignored, or the guest should wait until a more suitable day to fish with me.

It's not just fishing, it is everywhere and everything. People can't drive, go to a ballgame, fish, or even eat dinner without talking and texting. There is no use arguing with them. They think they have to stay in touch and plugged in at all times.
We saw a guy slam into the back of an SUV at an intersection in Shreveport Thursday night. Red light, vehicles five or six deep, brake lights everywhere, and he didn't even slow down. Totaled at least two vehicles, maybe more. Luckily we were one lane over or he would have gotten us. But hey, he was probably answering an incredibly important text...something like "where r u" or "sup?"

During tournaments we usually jam out, or if I'm fishing solo I'll throw in the headphones and jam out. My rules in my boat are simple. Shut up and fish, if music keeps you quiet... Get some tunes going. I just like to keep it alive, not quiet and boring, when you're not catching anything for hours why do it in silence? Then when you do catch that kicker fish during a jam session... It gets me pumped.

While I've clearly stated that I believe the decision is a freedom-of-choice matter for each boater, I will say that extensive scientific human-factors testing over many decades has yielded the same clear conclusion over and over. It has shown that multi-tasking always brings with it a handicap/penalty for the most important task being performed while multi-tasking. In other words, ONE thing is considered the focus point, and all others are relegated to distraction status. What Razorback witnessed was a real-world example of the test conclusion.
Example: Are you trying to feel the bite of that all-important kicker fish in a tournament? If you are, a jam session on a radio or in earbuds will never HELP - it will, at best, introduce a risk that you will be distracted and miss ever feeling that bite.
For those tournament competitors not in my boat who jam out, I just got an advantage point, whether they realize it or not..... an even better reason to savor the tranquility as I stroke a good bag!
