So I just picked this unit up used and installed it at the ramp this morning. I'm pretty sure it is not working right, but I need to see if we can tell if it is the transducer or the unit itself.
For a little while it appeared to be reading the bottom but it did not appear to be imaging the bottom as you would see on Humminbird's website etc. Basically there was very little detail to it no matter how I adjusted the settings. It also appeared that the standard sonar returns were just like a "broken record" playback even though I was moving.
Then it got to where it was giving me erroneous depth readings vs my console unit. If I brought the unit out of the water and dropped it back in it would "settle down". But after a few minutes the depth would start flashing again and start bouncing around. It didn't do all of this until later in the trip today.
Also, I know I was floating over trees and rocks and it more or less showed me a flat bottom where I was at. AND when I would kick on the trolling motor to move the depth would go up real high and there would be interference on the display until I let off of the switch.
I didn't notice this problem until we got off the water but the transducer wire has a small cut in it near the transducer head itself, which is also against the trolling motor motor itself. It doesn't appear that any wire is damaged but I can see a foil shield that is not intact. Would this cause weird readings? I've got some stuff I can seal the cut with if that would fix the problem otherwise I assume the only other way would be to replace the transducer? Or could it be a control unit problem? I've never had ANY issue with my other Humminbird and am leaning towards a bad transducer or the cut is causing problems. Help?

Ok so in doing some further research, I'm thinking I have an issue with the transducer. I am going to split the cut a little more and check the wires. Since it isn't working anyway, I figure it can't hurt. I'm going to attempt to solder anything that is messed up back together and make sure the shield is intact or make it intact. I have watertight heat shrink to put over it and hopefully that will do.
Has anyone had problems with a GOOD transducer with interference with the trolling motor? I tied into the same accessory power that the old unit was in. It goes to the crank battery so I don't think it is a power issue.....

First of all you are using the wrong transducer for the trolling motor application.

The PROPER one is the XTM 9 DI 25 T. It is a trolling motor puck that has extra internal shielding to help with possible RFI from the trolling motor.

Ok I'm not going to argue with you but is the XNT 9 DI T ONLY allowable on the transom? Since the transducer shield is obviously made for the purpose of mounting it to a trolling motor, is it not possible to use it on a trolling motor without any issues or am I wasting time and effort trying to get it to work and save the money? I don't mind buying a transducer but they aren't cheap and if I don't have to I'd rather not......

The Transducer Shield and Saver mount is made to fit that transducer. It is up to you to properly apply it.
There are at least three other ways to use it on the transom--L bracket for the side of a jackplate, wedge for a holeshot plate, and Spring Back bracket at the bottom of the hull.

If the trolling motor is a selectable speed model, the chance of getting RFI is low and that application is usually OK. BUT a variable speed trolling motor is different. The electronic speed control is a source of RFI and in that case using the proper PUCK is the first step in avoiding it.

If the extra shielded pucks were not a good idea, they would not exist. There are two DI versions.
The one that matches the frequencies of the transom DI transducer is the XTM 9 DI 25 T. The one that is 83/200 kHz compatable for the 800 series and larger units is the XTM 9 WIDE DI 20 T.

Ok, so what it sounds like, no matter what I do, it won't work right without putting the proper TM transducer on it. I've also got a filtered power cable on order to eliminate that possibility.
Any ideas on where I can get the right transducer at a reasonable price?
