Alright I have a Couple of Glass Crankin Rods love em for Crank Baits, (Constant reeling or stop and go retrieve) But here lately i been on a Jerk Bait bite (soft and Hard baits) on my home lake. It might be personal preference. but it didn't take long for me to cram that Glass rod back in My rod locker. On the Initial Jerk, snap or twitch, and then throwing slack back into the line for the bait to be erratic its just to Flimsy/Floppy I took a Medium/heavy worm rod with 12LB line, and just back the Drag off a bit. any one else feel the same way?

I use a 7' MH rod with a moderate tip for jerkbaits. For me, the medium rods don't have enough backbone for it. The MH rod keeps me from wearing out my wrist and arm working the bait. Plus you can cast a little farther. . .

For hard jerkbaits I use a medium power rod. I like it to have some tip so I can get a little better action out of the bait, or at least that's what I think. With a soft plastic jerkbait I use a medium heavy

I like the MH for the same reason stated above cast farther and I feel like I get a better hookup with the plastics. Especially when the bite is on a long line.

with Jerkbaits I prefer a 7 or 7'6" MH rod with a semi fast tip...

With Flukes I actually prefer a 7ft M Spinning setup....this allows me to have a strong hookset but not over do it....

Funny how different we all are. I use a 6.5 foot medium action rod on hard jerk baits because I can cast farther. I can't even imagine trying to cast a Rogue on a MH like many of you use.

Then on soft jerk baits, I like a MH for good hook penetration on my hooksets though I will use a medium action on occasion just knowing I need to really put the steel to them when it's time.

What VanDam says Wack is just to be sure you begin and end each jerk on slack line and that's how you keep the erratic action in your bait.

I don't think a glass rod would be a good jerk bait rod in my hands.

Tight lines,

J

I use a 7'2 med cranking rod fast tip, I like a rod with a lot of tip in it. I feel as though with a med heavy I over work the bait.

Soft plastic jerk baits are totally different animals from treble hooked jerkbaits and do require different actions to get the most from each bait.

On a Fluke or Sluggo type bait, you def want a stiffer rod in order to facilitate a good hookset, basically the same rod that you would use for a light T-rigged worm would be fine for this.

On a hard jerkbait like a suspending Rogue, you will fare better with a lighter action rod. Two reasons for this, I think. First, the lighter action allows the bait to perform more erratically on the jerk-slack, jerk-slack method that is so effective with this type of bait.

Second, when the fish takes the bait, the softer action rod is less likely to pull the small treble hooks out of the fish. I don't feel that it has to be a glass rod but I do like a medium action rod for this lure. I also prefer a shorter rod for this method. I think the rod I use is a Loomis 6' 3" that is specific for treble hook baits. It is the same rod I fish Spook-type baits on.

If you have good sharp hooks on the bait, you don't need a hard hookset. Reeling up fast and lifting the rod at the same time will set the hooks just fine. You don't have to bury the steel like you do on a worm or a jig. Just IMO.

I agree with Ken. Isn't the jerkbait rod the softest tip in the locker? even dropshot you want a little more tip for good hookset.
