My question stems from the other thread about the shortage of overs this past weekend at Fork. The ol timer on there seems concerned about the time frame it takes a fish to grow and become over 16" (protected within the slot).

I know on Rayburn and Toledo we see posts and hear stories all the time about people not only keeping fish, but some keep 5+ lb fish. Personally I think Fork is fished more for recreational purposes than most any other lake in the state - not for food purposes...meaning most fishing is catch & release. Do that many people actually keep fish on Fork?

I have fished the lake for a long time and never ate a bass out of there.

Back when the slot was 21 inches I would see a lot of out of state fisherman keep the 7-10lb lb fish they caught. They would be in coolers on ice. They were taking them home to have them mounted.

I think Richard was trying to say that a lot of the "unders" that are caught in these tournaments do not survive.

Yeah, I don't doubt this, but that's before replicas were around. Nowadays, practically no one keeps a fish for a mount.

There were plenty of places that did replicas at that time.

There were plenty of places but it just wasnt peacticed. Nowadays (Thankfully) it is. Photos /measurements/weight & it is a shot in the arm for BIG bass being released..no reason to keep a Big fish unless it dies before release. Propee handling techniques/time if year, etc. dictate survival....

I have fished the lake since the start and never even seen a fish coolered. I am sure some have been. Nothing like Toledo I see fish kept every time I go.

This past spring on toledo i never saw a fish released one day. Each boat and every fish straight to the livewell or cooler. Lots of guys were keeping fish just to give them away to guys who didnt have limits at the ramp. I think it helps a huge lake like Toledo where the numbers of small bass are enormous.

Talk to two different owners on the lake during TOT that were fishing off of their docks for "dinner". Bass was on the list.
