I finally took my first sunfish/bluegill trip to Fayette County Lake. I launched my kayak at Oak Thicket. Right away I knew it would be a challenge with a strong north wind blowing. In previous weeks there has been a strong south wind pushing bait up into these northern coves. Not today though. I fished with poppers, woolley buggers and jigs with no luck. I decided to fish with conventional gear, live red worms and a number 3 split shot the rest of the day. I caught 4 nice bluegill, but no red ear like I had hoped to. I decided to take the yak over to the South Prairie ramp around 8:30 AM. I fished the cove and found a small colony of tilapia. I caught 7, which were the first I ever caught. I also caught 4 or 5 more big bluegill but no redear. Finally, around 10:30, I decided to take the yak back to Oak Thicket and give it one more try. I added a second number 3 split shot to insure I was getting the bait down into the weeds. I caught 4 more big bluegill in about 45 minutes and then called it a day. I didn't catch large numbers of fish but I did catch good quality so it turned out to be a good day. I only live 40 minutes away so I expect I'll spend many more days searching for panfish there.

Sounds like a great day! Catching 20 big gills and tilapia is a job well done...

Appreciate the comments. I had to use live bait and conventional gear though. I felt like I was cheating on my fly gear, LOL.
Next task is to catch tilapia on the fly rod. Should provide for a fun challenge. Tying and testing new fly patterns adds to the enjoyment of the challenge.

Great idea Jess, I haven't tied those before. I'm not sure if I have the right chenille or not.

Even though Tilapia don't belong here, they are fun to trick

Nice catch! I have fished Fayette a lot over the years and it has always been a super lake to fish.
