Thought I'd post my unbiased opinion on my red tide experience on my vacation/fishing trip to fish my favorite bay, the LLM. I was coming down here anyway due to family being in town right now but since I saw mixed reviews on the red tide reports I thought I'd give it a shot and towed my boat several hours down here. When we pulled into the area on the night of Oct 4th I could definitely tell something wasn't right. The water didn't smell like the fresh brackish air I'm used to being greeted with. In fact it didn't smell like water at all. It was like that smell had just been wiped out. Then, occasionally you could smell the rotting fish. The next day I could see how bad it was in the channels in PI. It is a nasty dark brown water with darker spots where the tide has accumulated in mass. The smell is also disgusting. It makes me think of what it would be like if you had raw sewage dumping into the bay/gulf.
I didn't even have much desire to launch the boat in these conditions but I drug it all the way down here so what the hell. We launched yesterday and spent 4+ hours scouting the bay for clean water. We ran to the fish camps and checked out the pasture. There isn't a spot that we could find that hasn't been touched by this. Also, I thought it was at least interesting that the very few fish we did see (few mullet and specs) seemed kinda drunk. They were slow and weak. Another observation, there weren't as many dead fish up the LLM as there are around the causeway (quite a few dead puffer fish and we ran into a pool of a few hundred dead croaker by the south jetty). It seems like the vast majority of the fish have left the bay (hopefully).
Had I known what the conditions were going to be I'd have left the boat behind and spent that money (to tow it down here) on a good reel; or another trip when the conditions are better.

Weird. I fished yesterday and Landed over 3 nice reds and bunch of trout and lost a snook at the boat due to a pulled hook. The bay looked great yesterday and seemed to be improving. Post like this really hurt my business. I have had 14 trips cancel when they all could have caught fish very easy. All the bait fish are hurting makes for easy fishing with lures.

Went fishing at Arroyo City yesterday and saw lots of boat going into and coming from the bay. That tells me there is clear water and good fishing for every one that day.

just returned from south padre from a week of fishing, took my boat and was a little apprehensive about the red tide since i had never seen it.I had contacted several guides i know down there and they were all positive about fishing the bay.guess what they were all telling the truth! yea the beach was stinky with small dead fish, but we came to fish the bay anyway.we went north of town and the water was beautiful -no red tide and no aerosol from it,caught easy limits of trout each day along with reds, flounder and some black drum.i would rate fishing as very good and water quality in the bay as clean and healthy. So if you are planning a trip down to fish the bay- do it, the guides are killing it right now so take advantage of less crowded conditions and have a great trip!!

SPI just got here today wind is picking up Red tide in the wind , I don't know if its effecting the fishing , I'll find that out tomorrow but it is effecting breathing a little . Soon as I got out of the car I felt a tightness in my chest , was not sure what it was till I noticed several people coughing . I hear its probably temporary depending on which way the wind blows .
