Any ever caught a crappie with a black stripe from the top fin down its head to its top lip? Caught my first one ever Sunday and was wondering what it was? I've caught a lot of black crappie but never one with the stripe.

they are pretty common in some lakes. I used to have a bunch on display in the cave at bps that Wally donated.

They are Black Crappie with a gene that causes it, and both male and female fish can carry it...

We have a lot of them @ Whitney , they are called Mohawks. They are bigger and fatter that a white crappie and really seem to fight harder. Also taste soo good

We call them 'racing stripe' crappie... but Mohawk sounds good. cool

Kinda rare... 1 in 300-400?? Depending on what lake.

Plenty of those on Lewisville. They are no different than other crappie

I was watching a fishing show this weekend, and they said it is a crossbreed between a white and black crappie. Not sure tho,

I was told that years ago Ernest Paty started marking some of the crappie he caught before releasing them.
He did this on all of the lakes he fished which is a whole bunch of lakes.
He used a permanent "FISH MARKER". Those fish started reproducing and their offspring had that permanent
FISH MARK on them and thus was born the Mohawk Crappie that we have in our lakes today.
