I know kayak fishing has taken off in the past ten years of so, but does anyone still use canoes?

I did when camping. Canoes haul more gear but also catch more wind. Solo they can be challenging as well. I would like a big old town to have but now space is an issue.

I really considered buying a canoe before I bought my kayak. But I wasn't sure I wanted to man handle a canoe

If my canoe could "hold position," it would far exceed a kayak in fishing.
I have one of the very best ones, a Meyers Sportspal S-15, and it is 38" wide at the gunwales and 44" with the sponsons (like a foam rubber boat collar). I can literally stand up and work a trolling motor across a windy, choppy lake and it is rock solid. It weighs 67 lbs.
And two big men can fish out of it easily.
The big issue was mentioned by another: they blow around. But, with anchors and fishing in the right circumstances, these are great.
Texas is generally windy; I use my Slayer Propel 10 almost exclusively now.

I have a pelican gamefisher 16' canoe, love it when fishing with other people. fishing alone it can be a hand full to load and unload. That is the only problem I have with it. Was great when the kids were little, caught lots of fish out of it. Recently I have gone to kayaking with some friends. I usually fish small water, so the canoe was great very stable. Put three people in it a got around good with a trolling motor. Canoe is rated for a 5 horse motor. Was in Austin area last week in the kayak for about 9-10 hrs. missed the canoe for the ability to move around more in the canoe. Having said this, I am thinking about getting rid of the canoe. A kayak is just easier to muscle area. I getting old.
May the Good Lord bless you with a bend in your rod.

Built a pirogue 10 years ago, and if it wasn't damaged beyond repair I'd be using it instead of building a new project. At 65.4 lbs it was easy to get off the top of my vehicle would draft at 4". As mentions though, the only issue I had was wind would blow it around. The new one will be between 40 and 42" wide (32' at the base) and about 13.3' long. Should be around the same weight or lighter and sit lower so the wind won't effect it as much. I call it a canyak since I'll be sitting higher than a yak, but the front and rear will be enclosed.
I'm on other forums that deal with the old turbo powered Buicks.;)

For 27 years was strictly canoe fisherman. Currently own 3 aluminum canoes (13' and 17'Grumman, 17' Osage). 2 years ago added a Hobie PA 14 to the fleet. Fish mostly small, quiet waters. 3 of the 4 craft get at least 10 trips a year. Depends on where/what I'm chasing. Smallest canoe has home made anchor davits, both ends to anchor canoe over brush piles. For trolling sand bass or stripers in Brazos, usually take 17' Osage w/Minkota trolling motor. Kayak is

Kayak is for windy days, fast/longer travel.

We picked up a canoe a few years ago because it was such a good deal ($200) and we use it more often than you'd think. Although we are primarily yakkers, there are times when having the canoe in reserve comes in handy (large group of paddlers, camping, taking small kids, etc). Like I said, it gets used more often than even we thought it might. Having said that, we spend a lot of time on rivers/lakes, so me may not be the 'average' family.
