I assume I could catch white bass with minnows? Is there anything else that will get them? I caught 2 on worms but they are always small. How can I up my size? Do they bite on lures?

Yes, they will hit minnows. They hit lures readily too. Everything from crappie jigs to slabs to crainkbaits to inline spinners and who knows what else. Pretty easy and fun to catch.

For the most part white bass are open water fish and the majority of their diet consist of shad. They will hit just about any lure thrown at them. During the spring when they run up creeks they will hit just about everything. I have seen them be very selective on baits but I always have a minnow bucket with me during the spring run. I also down size my baits and line during this time of the year because I have seen it make the difference between catching fish and coming home empty.

There are several threads on here with the "Mepps Method" video detailing how to locate them and catch them. I forgot the anglers name, but he has quite a following of people who swear by his technique using size 3 and 4 plain Mepps inline spinners. I couldn't find size 4 anywhere so I ordered them online. Now I just have to locate a big school suspended over a hump or point.

I'd rather be fishing...

Look up Dennis Christian here on the forum and access his videos. He also has a page on the Mepps website. Follow his techniques to a "T" and you will find success with White Bass and other fishes. As for their diet, looks like that has been well covered on this post already! Feel free to PM me or call with any other questions at any time.

Blue Fox is go to. I like a no 3 on the lake, and a 0 in the creek during the spawn.

Daniel, their main diet is specifically threadfin shad. But, they will eat just about any animal small enough to swallow, i.e. crickets, worms, minnows. I've seen them eating grasshoppers off the surface in years when grasshoppers were all over the lake surface. I've seen guys fish with them using dead shad in waters below dams - like fishing for catfish. Having said that, most are caught in schools that are feeding on threadfin shad, which grow to be about 3 1/2 inches long and roam about in lakes in schools we like to call "bait balls". Sometimes these bait balls can cover several acres, and when you find white bass, hybrids or stripers feeding on them it is a fish catching bonanza. You can throw anything flashy with a hook and catch them.

Thank you everyone. I am really hoping to land a big one on Friday when I go fishing. I will have to fish from the shore. I will consider buying a Mepps just for the day. I use Rooster Tails but I imagine the Mepps have a better profile.

Also, because I am bank fishing. I don't know if they would affect my approach towards landing white bass.
