 Crappie on the Humps?

Yesterday on Grapevine we were fishing for the white bass. They were scattered and we landed a total of 58 fish. About 15 were crappie. What is up with that? Only 3 were keepers and they all hit the slab. They were on the humps in 15-20 feet of water.

Must be following the shad around too. Happened to me last week on RR. Several crappie 25-35 fow on a slab/ fly.

They will definitely leave the brush to follow the shad, expecially on Gvine. They are just sitting below the sandies eating the scraps. Grapevine has been the only lake (I havent tried too many though) that I have caught crappie away from cover.

we had the same thing happen on Lavon. Fishing with 1/2 ounce lead slabs... catching 6 inch crappie in 20' of water.

I've had the same thing happen several times on benbrook the only difference is I've only caught 12"+ on the humps. I catch bigger crappie slabbing for sandies than I do when I'm targeting those slabs.

They do it at Bridgeport sometimes. We will be drifting live shad for Hybrids and catch a few. Below is my son with one caught on shad in August.

I think feeding Crappie are usually out chasing shad. When they finish feeding actively they return to the brush or cover to just hang out. Some schools hang out on humps, others on rocks and others prefer timber or brush. I'm of the opinion that there are more schools of Crappie that never get fished than there are ones that do because we get too locked in on one way to fish.

When this happens again put on a heavy jig, 1/4 0z or bigger and fish those humps and you might fill the box with Crappie. Don't be afraid to use a big jig head. I carry some 1/2 oz with #2 hooks for fishing deep humps. Works fine.

I've been using 1 1/2' 1/4oz silver jigging spoon and they have been hammering it. Been fishing it in the brush also. Get hung up a lot, but keep jiggling it and it usually comes loose!
