A Medium-Heavy power Rod is normally recommended for spinnerbaits, so you have the backbone to burry the big, single hook in the fish's mouth. It is easier/more accurate, however, to casting the bait with a softer tip rod, a Medium Power, and easier for the fish to suck the bait into its mouth. So, in some respects, a stiffer Rod is better, and in others, a softer rod is better.

For my next trip, I loaded a 6' Medium action outfit with 20# Fluorocarbon line so it will have less stretch, to compensate foe the softer rod. I'm sure the shorter rod, with the soft tip, will allow me to make more accurate casts around boat docks and other cover. Do any of you use a set up like this? If so, what are your thoughts about using a Medium action for spinnerbaits?

It depends on the weight of the spinner bait and the type of cover your fishing around. If you wanted a shorter rod for fishing around tighter cover I would have still stuck with a mh personally. Your going to want the backbone when you hook a biggun' around heavy cover or when that fish wraps you around a dock piling. If your fishing an open area with a quarter ounce spinnerbait, then a medium may be okay, but all other situation mh.

Texanbassin, thanks for the reply. What you said makes sense. I don't have a M-Heavy rod that is less than seven feet long. Since I don't use spinnerbaits very often, I don't want to buy another rod. So, guess I'll just try this medium rod and I have a problem, I'll start using one of the M-Heavy seven footers. That is what I've used in the past.

Maybe instead of up sizing to 20 flouro why not try 30 or even 50 braid. Its not like visibility is an issue when you're throwing a bait with a metal wire in the middle of it and would certainly give you more hook set power than flouro. If I wanted to offset the rod softness this is how I'd go.

This is the rod that I have used sense I laid down the 5.5 pistol grips. When you get old and have to stay with it for more than 2 hours you need to use both hand. Ha.. I use the A series handle which is shorter but can still get two hands on it when I need to.

I fish my Spinnerbaits in braid as well.

Works great and you can really feel what the blades are doing.

I use my Loomis crankbait rod and it seems to work great.

Not sure it'd be the endorsed set up by most but works for me.

Personally I think it's a terrible idea. I have learned my lesson the very hard way a couple times in my life, about having under-powered rods. I lost a 10+ one morning because I got lazy, decided to tie on my best yellow magic on a medium rod because it was convenient. Plus I was catching a lot of small fish. That huge girl hit that yellow magic and I never turned her once. The rod just got ravaged, couldn't handle any of it.

Plus the difference in the hookset on a M and a MH rod is DRASTIC. You really need a good hookset with single hook lures. Use a MH rod and if you're worried about it being too still, use some mono so it will stretch some. There's really no point in throwing a spinner bait in fluoro. If you don't want stretch, why not use braid? You can cast it farther and it has a smaller diameter.

I'm also not a fan of ANY rod less than 6"6 for bass fishing. It takes WAY more force to make a long cast with a short rod, and the hookset loses a ton of power.

7' MH with some good mono or copoly is all you need. Don't overthink the spinnerbait, it's probably the easiest bass lure to use.

Timwins31, ok you guys have convinced me. I'm going to put the short Medium action back in the corner of the garage and tie the spinnerbaits onto a 7' MH rod. I kinda knew what I was doing was not likely to work well, but that's just me. I'm always tinkering around and sometimes i do things that don't make sense. Thanks for everyone's help.

For 1/4 oz and 3/8 oz with small blades I throw a Loomis SBR 812C with 17 flouro. For 3/8 oz with big blades and 1/2 oz I throw a Loomis SBR 813C. Hands down the best blade rods I've ever thrown.

Those are no-doubt fine, technique-specific rods you are using Chance. Bet you do enjoy using them.
