Went out on Ray Roberts today to try my hand at some bass fishing. I do tons and tons of crappie fishing and dabble frequently in catfish and sand bass with a good deal of success exclusively on Ray Roberts but for some strange reason I got a wild hair to try out bass fishing to see what all the hype is about. Anyways went out and bought a 7' Abu Garcia Veritas 2.0 with the fancy lil micro guides and intended to just buy the cheap Abu Garcia black max reel in case this whole bass thing wasn't for me but ended up with the Lews American hero. Threw some suffix 832 braid with a seagar invisx leader. Tied a strike King red eyed shad bleeding shad version and grabbed my equally novice yet equally formidably equipped step dad/fishing buddy then grabbed the boat and set out around 10. Anyways caught a ton of lil bitty bass, a 4 pound drum, a couple maybe 2-3 pound bass(notice I didn't specify large mouth, small mouth, spotted, black etc because I haven't a single clue how to tell the difference) and of course a ton of trees. Now if I'm still alive after my wife sees the good ol cabelas Visa card statement I could definitely use some helpful advise. I don't need any secret spots or tournament jeopardizing secrets but any kinda pointers would definitely be greatly appreciated. If anyone is wondering I caught the largest bass in party cove off a Texas craw colored slither rig with a 2/0 hook with some kinda huge kvd approved salty pumpkin and chartreuse tube just slowly jerking it across the sandy bottom. Just when I thought I found my new favorite combo I cast again and my line snapped at my double uni knot and that was the end of that.

Excellent! I don't know if your familiar with the Fishing For Freedom tournament that Texas Boat World of Killeen and Marine Outlet in Temple sponsor every year, but I recommend you look into it. Its the 24th of October, next weekend, and its absolutely free. Basically boaters will take a non-boater veteran's out on Lake Belton to fish the tourney. There are several prizes, the top being a new triton bass boat. Of course everyone is trying to win the boat, but its also an opportunity to make friends and learn about bass fishing. Check it out. http://www.texasboatworld.com/come-and-watch-pictures-from--fishing-for-freedom

Cowboysfan that sounds like a pretty awesome thing they are doing for service members and retired vets. As much as I'd like to get involved in that I'm not real big on crowds and competitions. Kinda an anti-confrontation phobia kinda thing going on. I think that's why I really picked up fishing what with the peacefulness and what not. I've mostly been watching a ton of YouTube. There's a ton of great stuff on there from flukemaster, kvd, wired2fish etc. I'm just a firm believer that there's helpful information out there everywhere all we have to do is ask the right people and I know the right people are definitely on this forum.

I feel ya, I watch flukemaster myself. Check out tacticalbassin, they fish outta Cali and use a lot of big swim and glide baits. LakeForkGuy has some great tips, and is a lot closer to home! Good luck.
