First off the water clarity is about 1" (that's inch, not ft). It is green and you can't tell if the water is 10' deep or 1' deep due to the dirtyness of it. South shore (4 fingers) has the clearest water and the biggest fish like the clearer water.
Running the lake...
Find a few maps, google earth is good right now because it's current pic is close to the current drought stage. You will most likely be launching at Calliham Park; but I believe 99 bridge launch & Mason Point ramp are both open. South Shore boat launches are closed
.
When you launch at Calliham you will be able to go left or right, right is the lake. When you hit the lake you will see 1 billion trees. There is an island called Hog island and the area across the lake is Calliham Point (it has cabins all over it). If you drive directly between them you will be taken to the South end of the lake. There are some big trees in the river channel (you will see some; but many more are hidden). Do NOT attempt to run the river channel towards the dam or south part of the lake. You want to be 150 yards or so to the right of the channel, this is your safe zone.
There will be an island to the right and that's called Huisache island. Some real shallow water all the way around it right now. DO NOT attempt to drive around it at any kind of speed, you will stick your boat in the mud.
It you drive directly between Huisache & the river channel you will be in the clear all the way to the dam. When you hit the dam area you will see cuts in the lake, fish those points & such.
There are a few danger areas that I'll mention but I doubt you will hit them (at least I hope not). There is a big concrete tower just past Calliham point. DO NOT hug the right side of the lake while driving by Calliham point.
There is another concrete chunk at a pond called Naylors pond, I think it is visible right now though.
The river channel is full of trees, if you head up the lake towards Mason Point then ONLY idle the whole way, bad that way.
If I remember anything I'll post:
Something I thought of... The bait shop there is a joke, take anything you can think of because nobody there will have anything of use.
Not sure how many days you are going but if you get really depressed by the miserable fishing then you can head south west to Falcon or south east to Coleto Creek.
Used to be some huge bucks in there but the TPWD dept quit letting people feed them so they don't come out like they used to. But since we might start cooling off at some point it might be worth a drive around the park to see if any bigguns' are out. (If you like to look at deer). Usually some javelina too, kinda cool to see if you've never seen one before.
Also there are gators in the lake, they won't bother you except for during mating season.
