There will most definitely be varying answers on this topic, but I will ask anyway. How do you go about finding bass in the fall. Fishing this past weekend, I did what I have always heard about fall fishing: push towards the backs of creeks and coves and look for bait. While there were some coves that had a bunch of shad busting the surface, the bass seemed scarce and the ones I did catch were small. I realize this could have been lure selection, but I threw a lot of different stuff at 'em. Basically, the main question is what areas do you tend to concentrate your efforts on during the fall? Is there a certain type or location of cove to look for, etc? Thanks in advance.

Last weekend on Texoma they were on the windy main lake points leading back into the pockets and creeks. There were also fish on the first points inside the pockets but they had not pushed to the back yet. There were huge schools of shad everywhere we were fishing so I would say find and follow the bait which for us was at the mouth but not yet moved back into the creeks. Moving baits like jerk baits, crank baits, spinner baits, and topwaters produced best with a few bigger fish on shakey heads. May not be the answer you were looking for but I believe it is an example of how bass relate to bait in the fall.

See you on the lake and have a great day!

Agree with Doug R. It's not fall yet. Shad typically don't leave the main body of the lake until there is insufficient algae to support them offshore. Most freshwater algae thrives in waters 78-90 degrees. You won't see significant reductions offshore until the water drops into the mid to low 70's. At that point in time, shallow water in creek channels will be slightly warmer than the main body and more conducive to algae production. Shad will then follow their food source back into the creeks. Once the water temp gets into the upper 50's in the creeks the process will reverse as Shad must move out to deeper water to avoid drastic temp shifts common in the shallow water which can be fatal to them. To answer your question... Once the water temp drops into the mid 70's I start looking for Shad in the first 1/3 of the creek channels closest to the main body of water.

Water on Texoma Saturday was 73 so this makes perfect sense.

See you on the lake and have a great day!

I have been doing well fishing shallow in the morning and moving to deeper water as the sun comes up. The last couple of weekends there hasn't been a cloud in the sky and all the lakes I've been on (Athens, Ray Roberts and Joe Pool) the water temp has been 77. I've found plenty of shad in both types of water. Try to locate the clearest patch of water (lake turnover) and look for fish that are active by locating irregular shaped or broken up shad schools. Also, look for bass setting up on top of points, humps and other types of structure.

My two cents... and GL

Found the shad scattered from the main lake to all the way in the backs of pockets at Pat Mayse the last two weekend. Water started at 74 and the bass were aggressively chasing them. It's coming and soon. Square bill, fluke, swim jig and I was getting hammered throwing a Ribbit. Fun day

I've been going to my favorite fishing hole.. using my go to baits (weightless senko and 6inch curly tail in red/black) along the shorelines and on deep structures,. Lately I have only been catching dinks on the senko. Last night I was so frustrated because I knew the bass were there..that I ended up staying later than normal. Normally I wrap it up right at sunset..You know that time of the evening when the sun is almost gone the sky turns orange from the setting sun, the water becomes still and your casting as fast as you can try to to get that last spinnerbait bite on? yeah..stayed till then and and finally caught one about 1 1/2lbs..I was like sure...the bass get bigger right when you gotta go...so realizing that I'm an adult and I don't have a curfew anymore I so stubbornly and excitedly decided to stay past sunset..into the dark.

I begin to cast into the darkness and watch the stars as I casted. I used a 6inch red/black curly tail worm and swam it fast along the shorelines.I reeled it to make it look like a snake going through the water.. I ended up catching 8 bass in the next 30 minutes the largest was a modest 4 1/2 lb'er but almost all were over 2lbs...all in the exact same spots that I had been fishing..since 5pm... These bass were right along the shorelines most of the time.
Also just an FYI, when you are in the dark every fish you miss feels like it was 10lbs...so yes I def missed two 10lbers ... just sayin...

So if you are having a hard time catching...try up shallow (within 6-12 inches) off the shoreline..and after the sun has gone down and enjoy the quiet night and the stars while you're out there too.

Thanks guys, these comments help. I really liked that reply about the water temperature. I didn't even pay attention to it when I went out. Rookie mistake, I know. Will definitely be paying attention to that next time.

Honestly if you tie on a white jig and a greenish colored jig and use a trailer that will swim on it that's all a guy needs in the fall up shallow most of the time..

After the first frost, then the fall pattern starts to come together, shad moving into backs of creeks, like everybody says.
Now you can go out an catch fish for hours, tomorrow go out and can't find them.
It's getting better each day though, with the longer nights, just need a Good Front
That should really kick them in gear
