a good staple of chartreuse, blk/chart, and electric chicken will get you started. But research the colors for the lakes you're hitting. Also buying jigs from forum members can also help point to better color choices on a given lake. It's money well spent over the big box stores.

For a good selection of colors and sizes, look at Thermocline Lures and Crazy Angler Slab Bandits. Any of the colors that mimic natural bait fish, and some chartreuse/blue, chart/white, chart/black are good choices. Crazy Angler has a Slab Bandit in "meller yeller" that has caught a lot of fish for me.

You will enjoy crappie fishing, I know little about fishing the water out there. But look over Thermocline jigs, Jigum jigs, and crazy angler web site. Jigum is a tied jigs place, and the other two plastics. And they are many more on here that does a great job the more you see the more you will know about it. The best way to learn the colors is talk to the locals.

Black/chartruese, orange/chartruese, blue/white have worked well for me at tawakoni
Check out constant pursuit's website and check out the frogs
Hooking a fish is like playing string with a cat. The exact size, shape, color of string matters less than how you wiggle it- and little cats are easier to fool than big ones. John Gierach

Was gonna say don't forget Constant Pursuit Outfitters and Bonehead Tackle. I have some from every member vendor here and have caught good fish on all of them! Sometimes the Bonehead slim sticks do better than the thermocline Mr Fry and sometimes it's the other way around. It's about learning the lake preferences and colors.

My 2, go to colors are "Blue body and White tail" (shad mimic) and "emerald green body and orange tail" (Bream mimic) and the time to use is determined to the season and water temps! This has been working for me, for many years! I also fish muddy waters, 99% of the time.
Probing brush for crappie is my game!

Hands down my favorite is an 1/8oz grape limeaid. Pepop here on the forum makes them. I promise you won't find a better jig out there. Check out his website for details.

thanks guys I fish 1/8 most of the year; better feel of the jig and bite. About mid July, switch to 1/16 when the fish get finicky and you need a slow fall and small bait. Braid or no braid is a personal preference. I use mono. But I do recommend a fluro leader with braid unless the water is really stained.

Suffix Mono 6lb works for me and I use a Palomar knot! I like to keep my jig, horizontal! Others like them vertical, I don't miss many "Thumps".
